The Weekly Dip 8/5/22
We know y’all have been waiting patiently after our brief hiatus but fret not cause on this week’s annual Dip, we got some tidal waves for y’all to surf along, lots of ripple effects being made throughout today’s selections!
Bexi Bape - Like A Knife (Single)
Towards the end of July, we got introduced to Florida native Bexi Bape through her latest single titled “Like A Knife,” which is a dreamy-sounding bop that explains how deep her love is getting for you. It got her tossing and turning at night, feeling like something sharp is striking her heart. One moment away from you is like a lifetime; you walked into her life at the right moment, which is killing her to know you could potentially walk back out. Her deep affection for this special someone and her emotional draw can be heard softened in her tone on this release. For a first-time introduction to her music, I can say I’m hooked on the single and hope to come across more Bexi Bape in the future.
Mj Apollo - UNDR COVR (Video)
Fresh off the release of his recent album, “Gloria,” Mj Apollo delivers a visual treatment off the project by having gandhimadeit behind the lens to direct the video to his track “Undr Covr,” which surfaced earlier in the week and is already seeing substantial attention in the mix. The Shaka-produced banger keeps Mj in his element of corrosion & mystery with how he keeps hidden in the video yet dishing out scorching verses. Nobody else can make a record like this bounce, the joint by itself is a deifying record, and in the visual format, you want to be kicked back, counting cash, and planning your next takeover. It’s another incredible viewing from Mj, who doesn’t stray away from delivering immaculate visuals from his catalog.
Danyo G - Still Street (Video)
Since making significant leeway with his video release “Perky” last month, Danyo G decided to continue dropping more content for the masses by delivering a new hit-sensational video titled “Still Street,” which has him linking up with NFocus Films to give you a nice look through of Danyo’s lifestyle. Still in the streets with it, ain’t no fucking with Danyo’s grind or his paper, or you might leave with a few limbs missing. Russian crème backwood being rolled up with drank in his vicinity, Danyo is providing heat by the ounce and dope by the pound, and we ain’t talking weight in the streets either. He’s a cold-hearted hustler who bout his and living this way ain’t for the weak, best believe Danyo G stay tens toes down bout his with this latest release being a shining example of that mentality.
Mondo Slade - The Shinin’ (Video)
If you haven’t caught wind of Mondo Slade by now, don’t worry, his latest is about to wake you to death. Camp Crystal Lake vibes lyrically as Slade slays with his usual barrage of bars. I personally think he’s more frightening than a Jason, well with that goonish mask pulled over his face, it’s like he’s reeling in MC’s with bait & they take it everytime, poor little fishies getting gutted if they dare try to drain this swamp he’s wading in. Mondo is snapping bones like crocodile jaws, leaving MC’s up to their neck in alligators whenever he’s seamlessly stalking his prey. Hopefully this is just one of many visual treatments we get off his latest “Shoots & Ladders” album, out now by the way & boy is it a menacingly soothing listen!
Denzel Stone & Treylen - TOP CHEF / STOP SKiPPiN CHURCH (feat. CJ RLT, NOBLE, D NEL & APE $TERLING) (Video)
Another two in one but this time around, it’s much more massive than just two solo Treylen records. Opening with the previously released posse cut “TOP CHEF”, negately shot in a Home Depot, showing these gentlemen working together to achieve a common goal, building that fucking table but could also be seen as them all bringing something to the table in terms of piecing it together. All 4 MC’s deliver fiery verses as if their lives depended solely on it. As laidback as Treylen can be, he’s fully gassed up on his first performance here, feeding off the energy of his elite brethren, who all came with their A-game! The second half of these visuals bring us with Ape $telling assisted “STOP SKiPPiN CHURCH”, where we mostly hear Ape just speaking that silver of his, Treylen then sliding through with the infectious hook. A nice little tease of what’s to come from the Hood Hippie in these coming months!
Chris56 - NO CONTACT (Video)
Another one of them ones from Chris56 & it honestly might be the breakup anthem of the year! If you’ve ever been in the no contact phase of a breakup, man, it can be a gruelingly tedious process to overcome & sometimes we even slip up cause, no matter how much we say we move on, I don’t think we entirely do, we just learn how to adjust to life without that person. Still, a part of us remains wondering, maybe I can get them back if I just focus on myself & possibly reattract them or we can just party that pain away until we grow tired of filling these voids within ourselves with girls, liquor, drugs, whatever your vice of choice. As earnestly heartfelt as this record is, you can expect more of that throughout his album “provider” which is out now!
Shelly Knicks - Auto (Matic Static) (Video)
With Trent behind the visuals, you already know it’s another one for the books but especially when he’s linking with artists he’s consistently worked with throughout the years, like the great Shelly Knicks. Taken off his magnum opus “The Love + Space Connection”, we finally get the visuals for his top record at the moment! The lone cut on this massive album that’s strictly on some rap shit, at least musically speaking. Life is his video game & we’re just being sucked into the arcade where he continuously plays with our minds with the amount of wit littered throughout his bars. Literally too, the visuals play out like a video game screen & you’ll love how interactive Shelly is with the numerous pop ups throughout! Their spaceship is one you’d willingly allow yourself to he abducted by, it just looks like too much fun to not want that for yourself!
Victor Mariachi - ON THE ROOF (feat. Raaqel) (Video)
Latinos been taking over the Hip Hop game & you love to see it. This record, as well as the giddy visuals pop like a piñata, as Victor & Raaqel both seamlessly switch their lyrical onslaught bilingually. Victor’s wordplay off rip takes a firm stand for a his people, flipping that irritating “illegal alien” term on its head. Now that’s how you open a fucking song, let alone verse! The lyrics as well as the visuals paint such a vivid picture for those who are familiar with the things he’s speaking on. This is working man music to party to the revolution to! This record is just certified fresh, like cracking open a cool Modelo & these bars that crush the competition easily like empty cans!
MAYDAY! - Own Way (Video)
Since starting their own independent imprint, announced during a recent show at Red Rocks, Miami’s own have been hard at work, prepping up their first independent album, since their departure from Strange Music, to which they blessed us with a decade of beautiful music under the imprint that will obviously only continue as they move forward. Luckily, contrary to this record & their visuals, the guys are no longer their own worst enemies, standing in their “Own Way” of achieving what they truly want out of this business, out of this life. It’s a beautiful anthem for those of us who are struggling with finding our lots in life, for those of us who may find ourselves lost & confused on our emotional musical journeys. Fret not though cause it’s Mayday & they are here to save us!
The 1975 - Happiness (Video)
Let’s be honest, who doesn’t have the most gushing crush on Matty Healy? The man’s songwriting continues to be as impeccable as it’s always been. Fans were a bit iffy about the previously released “Part of the Band”, which I thought was a beautiful record, you just don’t get music like that from most mainstream acts. But it seems the guys have rerouted back to that power pop sound most fans adore them for. Right up there with records like “Heart Out” or “If You’re Too Shy”, “Happiness” follows those same themes of wanting that love & validation from someone you adore. Nice 80’s style themes with the iconic saxophones & synths & Matty & the guys all in their element. So glad these guys only continue to expand their sound the further along they get in their respective careers! The 1975’s music is the “Happiness” this world needs at the moment!
