The Weekly Dip 7/22/22
Y’all know us, we just be Weekly dipping & hopefully y’all feel so inclined as to join us in wading in today’s waters. As always, we have a wide array of different artists & styles, just showing how eclectic we are when it comes to our musical pallets.
Shannon Sionna - Fantasy (Video)
This day is still surreal. The pandemic stopped a lot of us from doing the things we really wanted to do, a lot of visions we had were stymied from being executed but thankfully, Shannon remained patient with fleshing this idea out & little did she know, two years upon the beginning of the pandemmy, her vision would come to fruition in ways she never even thought were possible but that’s just the universe working beyond your favor Shanny! With this burst of nostalgia, shot by none other than Trent Owens, Shannon takes us on a trip down memory lane, literally cause she has no idea how much of a full circle moment the fact this was shot at Woodlawn park of all places, a place my Dad, rest his soul, used to take us quite often growing up. It just doesn’t get any more familial than this, good music, beautiful people, even better food, courtesy of Gordo’s Tacos, which I unfortunately didn’t get to try. What was originally intended be just a visual memory book of one of her family’s cookouts, she made it even more than that by inviting her newfound extended family to this social gathering! As far as she’s come in her emotional musical journey & personal growth, I can only imagine how surreal experiences like this must be for her. Good things happen to good people & although it may feel like a “Fantasy” to her, it’s all reality. I’d personally describe this sound as future vintage, she’s just an old soul within this new generation & it’s nice to get this playfulness from her after the poignant maturity of it’s predecessor. Don’t ever lose that kid in you that continues to dream big Shanny! Love the song credits at the bottom left of the screen too, going from the 70’s, 80’s & to the 90’s, really highlighting the era’s of music that truly inspire her. She even got the Sionna’s in the visuals too, adding that extra layer of instrumentation to really emphasize how massive this track is, I mean, how can you go wrong with a guitar solo like that? Probably the sickest solo I’ve heard in a while & it’s on a damn R&B bop of all places! And this is supposed to be the 1st taste of what we can expect on her upcoming EP? Fall cannot get here soon enough!
Arnold The Painter - True Colors (Video)
Yesterday evening, we got a submission in our email showcasing Texas crooner Arnold The Painter, helping us become introduced to his signature sound through his visual release titled “True Colors.” First, I was intrigued by the silhouette intro of the viewing that caught me off guard, but the more I walked forward in the release, the more it kept surprising me with how creative & passionate Arnold’s artistry is. He’s heartfelt and emotionally stricken with talent; this ballad has had my attention throughout the last few hours while I find myself coming back to the release with gravitation toward his mysterious essence. He’s an artist you must hear if you haven’t, and I guarantee he will strike a heart cord or two during your listening experience. - Frank WVZ
Whookilledkenny - Don Julio (Video)
The summertime is feeling hot & fresh, just like this latest release from Whookilledkenny, who’s pouring up the liquid audio of “Don Julio” in your cups and staring the party off right. Accompanied by some cuties by the pool, Whookilledkenny is seen donning his beachwear with the laddies in attendance dressed in their finest bikinis, twerking & enjoying the sun rays. Ten women and one Kenny to go around; kind of hard to stay that we don’t envy him in this viewing, but if you were grinding as hard as him, you’d understand that he would want to relax the best way he can. Cutting up a hit like this is easy for Kenny; building the creativity for such a potent drop is precisely why he’s living the way he is, and that’s because he sticks to the suaveness of his style to continue battling out records with power like his latest here.
Isaiah Flowers - Lizzie McGuire
All I’m saying is, after this burst of 90’s nostalgia, Hilary Duff better send our boy a care package with all the Lizzie merch possible! Isaiah’s music has always been some of the most earnest, coming of age ditties I’ve personally ever come across, just go back to his last album & you’ll hear what I’m saying. All the boys, including himself, are infatuated with her beauty & would practically do anything to be in her presence. Nothing quite like puppy love, that love at first sight, that love where you so desperately await that 1st kiss & when you finally get it, you fall head over heels. He never could’ve imagined him falling so hard for this girl, so much so that she’s now become a distraction, all his focus is now centered on her. That’s usually how it goes when you find someone you think is “the one”, you just wanna keep them all to yourself even though you know you can’t but hey, it’s worth the try right? Before he realizes it, he’s in way over his head fore this girl will not get off his case but it’s not like he’d want her to anyhow. A fun, little burst of heartfelt energy & the 1st indicator of what’s to come from South Texas very own flower boy!
beabadoobee - Perfect Pair (Video)
You wanna talk about earnestness though, beabadoobee is at the hilt of this feeling throughout her music. Still informing listeners just how great her sophomore effort under Dirty Hit is, even better than it’s personal predecessor! Beatopia is beabadoobee bringing us her bubbliest, most boisterous batch of records yet, pardon the alliteration, I had to bea! Not wasting time on promoting this album, beabadoobee offers us another follow up music video to the previously released “Sunny day”. The visuals here are laid back, her & the band just lounging as she details what makes them perfect for each other. She’s officially done with this person but they don’t seem to be getting the hints she’s throwing out. It sucks when there’s nothing left to say but, she’d rather take back control of herself than to continue living under the spell of someone who simply isn’t the right match for her.
Dead Cross - Reign Of Error (Video)
Honestly, when it comes to Rock, there’s no better supergroup out right now than the almighty Dead Cross. Consisting of Michael Crain, Justin Pearson, Dave Lombardo & Mike Patton, these guys first burst onto the scene with their self titled debut back in 2017 & now they have returned 5 years later, at a time when revolutionary music as such is needed. There’s not much I can say about this record other than, your fragile ears need be heeding the social commentary coupled with Patton’s never faltering wit. I’d go to their Instagram page & read the description of this upcoming follow up to their self titled debut cause I can’t possibly describe their music better than that!
Valee - Macy Gray (Video)
Valee has got to be one of the most interesting voices in Hip Hop. The man is a walking whisper with his style, you never really hear him coming unless you got really good hearing. I love his monotone flow though cause it really forces the listener to focus on what he’s saying & as always with Valee, it’s his wit & the way he delivers it so nonchalantly that separates him from most, especially those who try to consistently bite his style. Love the unique way he decides to pay homage to Macy by just playing off her name & equating the color of his Louie V bandana to the songstress. Everything about Valee is subtle, even when he’s delivering run on sentences like no other, you still can’t help but follow along cause, it’s just him as a whole that’s so compelling. Another riveting verse from Valee & let’s hope he keeps dropping them on us!
Wordsworth - Skin (Video)
It’s always great to see our veterans still out & about, dropping the most important & impeccable music of their career. If you don’t know Wordsworth then fret not, his latest noteworthy effort is a beautiful place to start, delicately titled “The Fragility of Life”, inarguably one of the most important albums of the past decade. On this track titled “Skin”, Wordsworth makes sure his words are worth your undivided attention & heeding as he goes into heartbreaking detail about the struggles his people continue to face on the regular. It’s unfortunate that they’re still here, having to put up with such senseless cruelty & blatant hatred & disregard for people who are just trying to live peacefully amongst one another. It’s a powerfully evocative performance & proves that Wordsworth words are still more than worthy!
Lady London - What Is It Giving
It’s nice to hear rapping ass Lady London do a record like this & still be rapping her ass off. When I say a record like this, I mean the obvious Trap Bounce, it’s a nice playground for her to swing her wit around on. She actually resurrected the term “slore” on this records chorus. When you see Lady London, you already know what it’s giving off, beyond Boss Bitch vibes but not only does she got the looks & the fashion to showcase how high class she is, her bars remain upper echelon as well. Even her voice, which is soft spoken yet still has this gritty undertone to it as she snarls out this lyrical onslaught to those who aren’t worthy of being on her level. She’s aware of how much an acquired taste she is but the question is, can you broke bitches stomach it? Probably not.
Pauliiito feat Mateo Sun - That Boy (Single)
It’s been a long time ago but finally, another full circle moment with these two legends reuniting on another banger to follow up “Corrupted Youth”, which was one of the 1st tracks I heard when I was 1st discovering the music scene here in San Antonio & let me just the say, the growth of these two individuals since then has been impeccable so it’s only right they knock us upside the head again, just in case we may have forgotten how dangerous these two are on the mic! I’m not even entirely sure what particular sound bite is incorporated into this subtle banger of a beat but it almost sounds like the crunching of teeth, which would be fitting as these two are absolutely devouring it with their flows & lyricism that just continues to excel! While Lito has this cocky swagger to his braggadocious barrage of bravado, Mateo Sun comes with that same energy but it’s his voice that just makes him sound more like a bully & he is with his bars, always has been. If you aren’t pulling up to the show tonight then you’re sorely missing out cause Lito about to blow the roof open with this one!
