The Weekly Dip 5/6/22
I bet you dip, he dip, she dip on this fine Friday of ours & we’re glad to share it with all you beautiful people. Speaking of beautiful people, that’s all today’s additions to our annual Dip consist of, some of these folks have even made ripples throughout our Weekly Dips, just goes to show that these artists are more than capable of making tidal waves whenever they so please.
Rapid Ric featuring Rich Greedy & Sertified - Whut It Dew 6 Freestyle (Video)
In March, DJ Rapid Ric had teased that an announcement about the return of his legendary mixtape series, Whut It Dew, could be coming very soon. It had been about 13 years since Whut It Dew 5 had dropped, and now the Mixtape Mechanic was ready to follow it up with the 6th entry in the series. Sure enough, on April 11th, Rapid Ric announced Whut It Dew 6 would be available in a box set, obtaining many valuable pieces, including the Whut It Dew tee back after 15 years. To also prepare new & existing fans of the series, he also slated a new freestyle would drop on 5/5 from Sertified & Rich Greedy to rollout the red carpet for the 6th mixtape. Being a man of his word, on Cinco De Mayo, Rapid Ric premiered the Whut It Dew 6 freestyle showcasing the Latin talent with both Rich & Sertified applying pressure out the gate for this Honcho MGMT-shot visual. Cash on deck with other built-in aesthetics accompanied these artists. At the same time, they spit hot-leaded verses over this zesty production, with the signature Whut It Dew logo being pressed on everything in the background. It’s a celebration to help welcome back the mixtape series. Having these two prominent figures in rap assist in bringing the festivities shows that plenty more surprises like this will be seen on the tape & I’m sure, in the promo. We hope you bought yourself a box set, and if you haven’t, you still got time but for how long? I’m sure you don’t want to wait and find out. - Frank Campos
Swanny Ivy - Yesterday (Interlude) (Video)
In a drunken state right by the phone, Swanny Ivy begins to spill out his woes on his recent album’s interlude “Yesterday” while on the other line, not caring if they're listening. He’s venting while explaining that yesterday is gone from the mistakes & disagreements to today being a new beginning. He’s contemplating why he’s even thinking about the past adversaries since he only wants you, you’ve been at places that no one else has been with him and why attempt to break something that’s not broken. He’s in other spaces in the video, which could be the creation of the world he said she’s making for herself. He’s waiting around to see if you will come back so he can explain himself. It’s chaotically put together by Loki Loveless so well that we can’t seem to get enough of his J Allan-produce record that has sonically induced us with a hit & visual masterpiece all in the same process. - Frank Campos
ZootedHeist - Ball (Video)
In the last few drops from ZootedHeist, we’ve seen him in his melancholy bag with records like “Heart Cold” & “Coffin.” Still, here on his latest visual titled “Ball,” he’s back to his old ways of being a menace with the flow by applying pressure to the Duvin & J Allan produced record. He has Mission City behind the lens in bringing out his aggressive nature of himself, thinking about the cash stacking up and the world becoming his in due time. He speaks about his opps wanting to see him down bad, but he’s not giving them the satisfaction instead. If they want to see him tossed off this earth, they will have to bring more firepower to do it. Deep in the trenches, we can find Heist back plotting the next plan of attack, and if this is the sound we can expect to be mixed in, then it’s something we’re anticipating hearing in the near future. - Frank Campos
Deshawn Visionz - No More Disguises (Video)
At the finish line of my reviews for our Weekly Dip series, we got a submission while I was finishing the last edit. Instead of waiting until Monday, I viewed the newly introduced Deshawn Visionz's latest visual, “ No More Disguises,” which, to my surprise, had me sitting down and begin writing to this gifted release. The piano-playing sample at the beginning draws you into the release. Then Deshawn starts applying a wonderment of lyricisms to the record by dishing out a prestigious series of bars that immediately got my attention. I think we have to clock it in at the fastest time a new artist has got me writing like a madman for a review. The come-up arc for an artist is something I always adore to hear & Deshawn paints vivid pictures of this with his words so keen & precise. It’s not comparable to anything out right now, this man is spitting heart & soul out on the record, and I’m on the anticipation line to hear much more from him in the near future. Deshawn, you got yourself a new fan today that will surely keep you on his radar for upcoming releases, and don’t worry, I will make sure to give a listen to your latest project, “Soulstice” this weekend. - Frank Campos
Kevin McGee - Back (Video)
“Back” with another reminder that if you’ve been sleeping on Kev, all I gotta say is that, not even I saw this backhand coming & ironically so, that’s not say that this concise little cut is a slap to the face by any means, it just hits hard & it came out of nowhere. Now the new intro to his “Comeback Kev” album, which if you haven’t heard yet, I suggest to re-listen with this new addition to the playlist/project, don’t get caught up in the title of it, we’ll just call it “masterpiece” for short, it’s nothing short of it. There’s nothing like a good soul sample, especially when you got an elite like Kev bouncing over the easy listening ever so gracefully. I gotta say too, it makes the “Comeback Kev” opus of his, that much more timeless a listening experience, I could revisit that album any day, even more so now. He even blessed us with a little self shot visual for it, it’s nice to see an artist in his element, loving every second of it.
Potent Da RockStar - CANCEL CANCEL CULTURE (feat. Zyco Path, Humble Lunatic, Enokh Xmortiz)
Potent back with another subtle banger, this time it’s a posse cut, which is always welcomed, the perfect excuse for everyone to pop their shit off, especially with this topic. I’m sure we all share their sentiment to some degree at the very least, they don’t rely on being offensive just for the sake of it, they’re actually just sincerely spilling out truth & calling out this cancel culture shit for what it is. It’s Potent that sticks out for me personally, the way he ends his verse too is exactly how I felt after hearing his performance, blegh is right, he went sicko mode on that verse. His voice makes it all the more dizzying. Everyone else holds their own too, the production as well is very militant but you’ll find yourself getting jiggy to it as well, it’s like, party music for the revolution if you ask me. If you walk away from this banger with one thing, let it be this, you can’t cancel anyone who lives in the center of their truth.
Eastside Fish - Gotta Go (Video)
Eastside leaving these boys sleeping with the fishes everytime he comes out the water with another one of them ones. Even his old shit is light years ahead of most MC’s best shit, he just has that charisma, it’s the voice, it’s gangsterish mannerisms, it’s just the swaggering bravado he upholds in the way he carries himself. He also is a rapping machine, it’s fucking light work for him to not only talk that talk whilst walking the walk but, he sure can weave gritty tales of his past life into these performances like it’s nothing, it’s introspective, which is always admirable. It also proves that Fish can dominate any beat, any style. I love that, while he is with the shits, it’s not like he’s asking for any of it, it kinda just finds his way to him so although he’s bigger than that, a much more, civilized, responsible adult, he still will wack one of these sucker MC’s back to back, as he should. Why would anyone wanna start beef with someone who’s just trying to chill & get these raps off? They obviously just wanna see if it’s true, the things he’s rapping about. Fuck around & find out.
AwkwardLowlife - Tear Drops Mean We’re Even. (Video)
Looks like AwkwardLowlife is back from the dead, resurrecting his old moniker in preparation for the sequel to his stellar project “Awk Low” & if you haven’t seen the artwork by now, the ominous overtones, portentous like dark clouds, just goes to show that, this may be his moodiest batch of records yet! Of course, the eclecticism remains, he’s always had a diverse style, jumping from many different genres & styles throughout his projects, though every last one is it’s own beast. We even have him in the director’s chair & I gotta say, I’m loving these edits. I love how he’s able to create some top quality shit without being all extra about it, even his directing style is all his own. Hilarious how in his post for these visuals, he puts “Torture” by Ashley After Life, love the alliteration & I mean, she was holding our boy captive, reminded me of the scene in the 2nd season of Fargo where Peggy has Dod tied up, stabbing his ass as well. Shot & engineered by Shylio Graves as well, these two have done plenty of work together at this point so I only see their creative relationship continue to blossom. As for the record itself, it’s classic Awk Low, a perfect genre bending of Trap, Indie Alternative, hell, you can even throw Pop in there, it’s just good music at the end of the day.
Dres, Stu Bangas - Hate (Video)
First of all, glad to have another Stu Bangas production on the Weekly Dip, such a criminally underrated producer. Anyone looking for that raw shit, he’s the go to & his latest offerings with the legendary Dres of Black Sheep is exactly that. I swear, if this isn’t gonna wound up a full length EP, at least they’ve blessed us with 3 monstrous records, “Hate” being the middle child thus far. Dres is speaking nothing but love, light & reflection over this introspective number. Not the production I’m used to hearing from Stu either but it still has that signature knock of his. It’s beautiful that we’re being reminded of this brother’s greatness, it’s a must that we celebrate legends like him while they’re still here, dropping some of their best material this late in life, it’s beautiful. Not only that, but they also blessed us with “Simple” & a new single that recently released called “Sheep Stu” & it is the complete opposite of this track cause what they whipped up in that witches cauldron is a viscous amalgamation you don’t wanna fall into, unless you’re a Hip Hop head of course.
Dizzy Wright & DJ Hoppa - Promoter (feat. Man Like Devin & B-Real) (Video)
Yes Dizzy, tell us why you promote that good marijuana. Honestly, who isn’t smoking that good herb these days & at least if they aren’t, there isn’t so much a stigma surrounding it as much anymore, well with certain states legalizing it but there’s still a few folk who refuse to believe in the tree but I think ambassadors like Dizzy & obviously one of the kings of this culture, B-Real of the legendary Cypress Hill, I mean he was the 1st rap artist to smoke on live television, he & the Hill, he’s been a spokesman of the leaf for decades & still going strong blowing strong. The reggae vibes to this give it that feel good element, kinda reminds me of Sublime even, it’s nice to see him carry on this tradition of music dedicated to this lovely little plant. B-Real with an iconic verse as well, playing the role of DA, trying to get a much giddy Dizzy free of all charges. That hook as well from Devin, oooof.
WESTSIDE BOOGIE - STUCK (Video)
Looks like we’re that much more closer to Boogie’s sophomore effort on Shady Records. After blessing us with the DRAM assisted “Aight”, a long awaited collaboration if you ask me & a swift reminder of just how subtly ill Boogie is, we get hit with yet another single that is much more in your face. First we got the COLORS studio performance of this, which is as good as the actual visuals & single, as you get to see the raw, seething passion behind this fervorous track, while Boogie is still taking a creative approach to those visuals. He’s such an exciting addition to the Shady family & honestly, has really given that label the boost it needed, Boogie just has this swaggering bravado to him, plus his music is as poignantly honest as it gets, not to mention, he got melodies for days but can also rap with the best of them so if you’ve been “Stuck” sleeping on him, he’s come to wake you to death.
