Kevin McGee - Heartbreak Pack II (EP)
Oh, y’all thought Comeback season started only to stop with Kevin’s impeccable “Comeback Kev” album? Tsk tsk tsk my friends but fret not if you were sadly mistaken, Kev has just the formula to patch up broken hearts with the second installment to his Heartbreak Pack series! I had the honor & privilege of hearing some of these records before they made it out to everyone else & they sound even better than that day I heard them! Opening up with more of that “Self Investment”, Kevin capitalizes off that sentiment to even more epic proportions on “DIY”. Just the sound of this one stands out from most of his output, from the sample, the scratches, the rhymes, I mean, there is nothing like a heartbreak that’ll bring you the determination to focus on yourself.
On “Let Me Go”, Kev weaves a tale of two lovers with two different attachment styles. It’s unfortunate when people grow apart but it happens & when it does, it can feel like everything around you is crumbling so I’m glad the production really represents that. Jonathas offers his soaring vocal work to this epic number. On “Call It”, Kevin is manifesting his dreams into reality, knowing that all his wants & desires will inevitably come to fruition as long as he maintains his faith despite the many obstacles standing in his way. People from the outside looking in will never understand what it’s like to be you, they can empathize but even that’s hard for most to do unfortunately. You gotta stay strong throughout it all though & you can love people but you can’t depend on them, you’re only letting yourself down & you can’t afford to let the only person who will truly always be there for you, down.
On “20 Something”, Kevin is looking for more out of this life as he inches closer & closer to 30. There’s still a lot left for him to accomplish & not a lot of time to do it before then but he’s still determined. He’s learned a lot maneuvering this game, let alone this life. Lots of heartache, mistakes, even wins & it all has grown his mind to be more wiser as he’s filling it with more & more knowledge the further he steps into his own. Closing with “LLOL”, Kevin winds down after a long day & self reflects on his emotional musical journey thus far. It’s been painful to get to this point of serenity & it’s even scarier to think that it can all dissipate into nothing, no matter how careful we are, life is just unfair like that. It’s all love though, even the love he thought was lost, it’s always stayed within him & he continues to give it back to those who need it on the 2nd Heartbreak Pack.
