SONBOY - The Boogie Monster (Single)

Before embarking on my vacation last week, I saw that Question had mentioned artist SONBOY on his IG that followed the notion that people should get familiar with him asap. It was enough for me to start getting introduced to his content right away since Question has a keen sense for out of this world talent. What made the introduction better was that SONBOY had just released a new single titled “The Boogie Monster”, which was a striking cover of the Gnarles Barkely record with the same title that had my curiosity within seconds of the track. The record made me keep my feet on top of the bed and kept me as far away from the closet in anticipation for the monster to come out.

Darkened with this production that sounds like an acid trip of a Trent Reznor orchestrated ballad comes SONBOY emerging with poised vocals about a creature of the night who's dead already, lurking through his window waiting to seek vengeance for the wrongdoing he's done. The hungry brute awaits during the midnight hour to devour him, yet he's hiding from him by sleeping away this nightmarish night to see the light from a new day begin. The end of the record is insane, which I don't want to spoil anything for the listeners. Just know it had me at the edge of my seat like great horror flick with an unexpected twist. I love how his emotions just bleed through the record where you can hear the passion of his voice just change up with the way the beat sways in and out the more the story is told. He even features an Edenesweet Mix, a chopped and screwed version of the record that's a bit more haunting since it's slowed down with the effect sounding like it's inching you closer to a sunken abyss. It definitely goes well with the track, and it's excellent for a listening experience to check out the original then hear a more twisted transition of the ballad that you will keep in rotation for the month ahead.

Consider me a new fan of SONBOY; I'm intrigued to see what more he has in store for the future. You can sense that he's an artist that seeks to out top his work, which he does in an amazing fashion that gives you a little bit of everything. That's an artist with compassion for the arts, and we can respect that to the fullest.
