Mason Duran - Retrograde (Single)

Mason Duran is an impeccable songwriter; as exhibited on his 2018 debut “Alone,” who knew that just a few years later that a lot of us would have to spend our time being just that, but Mason ain’t complaining. He’s on cruise control, windows rolled down, early in the morning, reminiscent of a much simpler time, swerving past corona & rolling down Zarzamora, making me think about those bus rides I used to take down there to see people who are no longer in my life.

I also tend to regress when I depress myself during my reminiscent moments, especially when that’s coupled with having to face any conflict. We usually retreat to things that probably aren’t good for us but, for the moment, makes us feel whole again & that’s the feeling Mason delivers here. Even the sound of it screams throwback & for me personally, it sounds like the mid to late 2000s, but the content is very much now; it’s so bittersweet like black licorice, very palpable.

It sounds like weed burning in a closed area full of smoke as it swishes back & forth like what’s in your cup, but you don’t need to be under the influence to enjoy this necessarily, but if you are drinking to it, you’re no doubt going to stare at that drink & see ocean views. If you’re smoking one to it, all that fog is going to form into cloud nine for you to lay atop & just float across the air without a care in the world. Even if you aren’t doing either, you can still feel that imagery that his lyrics & smooth vocals instantly make you think. Let’s just hope that he’s cooking up a sophomore effort cause we need good vibes like this more than ever.
