The Weekly Dip 2/17/23
The movement is splashing y’all with some tidal wavy records in today’s dip. You may see a few familiar names on this one, as they are consistently dropping enough heat to force us to continuously need a dip so shall we?
Astasia feat Ashaunté - Toxic Love (Video)
All praise to one of our favorite songstress Ashaunte, who shared at the end of January that she would be featured on Astasia's newest single titled “Toxic Love.” It helped us get introduced to another talented artist who has souls trapped in her latest heartache ballad that is pulling strings of pain and passion at the same time. It’s also beautiful to hear a graceful combination of both artists' vocal ranges going from angelic to sincere in mere seconds. Their visual also gives us a vivid look into their word’s painful expressions while they both attempt to seek love at the wrong times, which tends to make them stronger from making the same mistakes again. It’s a deep record that has become one of our favorites of the month so far and gives us a new artist to become more familiar with for any upcoming releases.
Qwest feat Josh Stone - Dead Homies (Video)
After the success of “Leeroy Jenkins”, the dynamic duo is back to pour one out for the “Dead Homies”. But this ain’t your typical ode to those fallen, it’s more so a record about cutting out the deadwood. Captain Olde English will let you surmise as to who he’s referring to with the real he’s been forced to spill on this record. One thing about Qwest is he refuses to remain silent & just take the beating. When backed into a corner, he’s bound to push back. Vindictive with a vengeance when it comes to his venomous vernacular but he’s so nonchalant about it that you won’t even realize the king cobra struck you until the infection has already set in. Josh Stone has Qwest’s back as the two fend off any negative energies that are trying to interfere with their circle of peace. The two don’t fetishize drama, nor do they even wish to entertain it, this record is more so them being blunt about it if anything, not necessarily a diss or warning shot as the kids call it, just straightforward.
King Kyle Lee x Izzy93 - No Help (Video)
If you’ve been following the OG then you recently saw all the beautiful artists he was expressing love to. Now it seems like he’s trying to work with all of them, starting with the young gunner Izzy! This is all a matter of real respect real. These two brothers have built their foundation all by their lonely, they didn’t need any help from people who were probably already dead set in using them to their advantage. They in for a rude awakening though once these two get to slapping a beat around. When these two flow back & forth with each other for this lyrical onslaught, it’s like you’re slowly getting tire burn from all the dirt bikers running over you. There’s no point in crying out for help cause not even God can save you from the wrath they’ve subjected you to with this number!
Chakeeta B feat Nubia Emmon - Heartbreak Hotel (Video)
Slowing down the tempo on her latest track, Chakeeta B is back on the scene with a new record titled “Heartbreak Hotel. The record features Nubia Emmon, who explains that the place of comfort ain’t a place for kissing and telling, and while she’s has numbers on her line, she can agree they don’t belong to her, and she isn’t lying. Chakeeta B wastes no time to get her point clear that she’s ain’t the type of woman to be playing games with; her time is money, so if you wasting it, then you fucking up a check for her. Just because the record is slower than her last single doesn’t mean she isn’t hitting hard with the bars; this showcases her versatility that no matter the speed of the production, she can still be prominent with the wordplay and vicious with the raps. Looks and all come easy for her on this joint, and when matched together with the visual, it gives her another easy hit to have for your listening and viewing pleasure
Robbie Diesel x HOODLUM - Paper Plate
This right here is one of the main things I love about this beautiful genre we call Hip Hop cause it’s one of the only genres that not only brings different styles together but it unites people from all walks of life, from all different races, backgrounds, religions, you name it! That WhiteBoiFresh ain’t he? This new Robby Bank$ or Robbie Diesel if you will, since he’s always gassin’ when it comes to this music shit, has traveled all the way down to San Antonio to link with the iconic HOODLUM. The two compliment each other so well on “Paper Plate” & one can only surmise that they’ll be coming back for seconds. No matter how much food these two have on their plate, it remains strong enough to carry it all. It’s always exciting to hear two juggernauts come together for an unexpected collab!
GIRLPARTS - TRICK ENERGY (Video)
Nobody genre bends trap music & the hardcore as effortlessly as GIRLPARTS. The message is plain & clear, if you approach her with that “TRICK ENERGY”, whether you a boy or girl, you getting slutted out & possibly even gutted out with the way she’s flailing that blade, dripping like the blood from it. The range in her vocals to switch from some smooth, nonchalant rapping to that guttural screaming is impressive & quite honestly frightening to say the least, almost like she’s the Blair Witch herself. It’s hard to feel sorry for the poor souls who stumbled onto this lone cabin, unaware of the torture that awaits them. She’s almost like Pearl in a sense, luring her victims in with temptation & man oh man, are they in for a rude awakening.
Tylynn - The Hook Up (Video)
Nebraska native Tylynn has been on tear so far this year, showing zero signs of slowing up. Not even that long since dropping her latest two EP’s, she’s back with a new series called the Really Resilient Series, showcasing her undeniable skills on the mic. It’s a tour de force of bars. She’s treating this beat like her own personal playground, even leaving the kids attempting to have a good time with whiplash from this lyrical onslaught. Love the homage to the classic Master P film as well! She came out swinging with so much gusto on this first entry so one can only surmise how the following few Thursday’s are gonna sound like. Expect them to be better than the last though cause with this rap shit, she’s not to be toyed with but by all means, fuck around & find out if you feel so inclined.
Majur Deveaux - IFU (Video)
I FUCKED UP OKAY!? Its always nice when you’re able to take accountability for the role you played in the dissolution of a relationship. If you read our review for Majur’s latest smash then you already know it’s one of them ones for the soul. It’s an emotionally mature record that finds Major pining for another chance at reconciliation. If you’re a fan of R&B then you’re aware that, if the visuals are shot in the desert, it’s gonna be a banger. Unfortunately, there’s no water in the desert land she’s treading upon so there’s no way the flowers he’s given her are surviving, they just left their to wilt like their relationship. Let this record be a lesson to never be fooled by your own desires & to lead with love rather than lust.
Angel Cintron - Wonder (Reimagined) (Video)
Our prayers have been answered! Angel is literally one on God’s green earth, blessing our mind, heart & souls with her heavenly vocals. How you can still manage to have heartstrings after hearing this stripped down intimacy is beyond me but as if the original wasn’t already a masterpiece in & of itself. As stated with the last two, I don’t know how many times I can reiterate how taken aback I am by how great these reimaginations are & the fact that you can now pre-save “Reimagined: Collection 01”, which indicates that there will be more volumes to follow, we can only guess as to what gems in her catalog she’s about to perform for us. These performances videos as well, shot, edited & directed by Matthew Patrick, as well as herself, are at the same level as dare I say it, Lauryn Hill’s Unplugged. You got singers & then you got SANGERS & she’s a SANGER to the fullest with her soaringly serenading soulfulness. Her vocals, as well as the musical arrangements on these renditions will leave you feeling like you’re lying in the clouds. Everyone down below thought staring in awe at how much her castle in them keeps growing.
Jehry Robinson - Question Why (Video)
Don’t you ever “Question Why” Strange Music is forever one of the biggest juggernauts in the game, the artists they sign are all problematic, especially when it comes to hardcore lyricism. Jehry is as versatile as they come vocally but lyrically, he’s as much of a beast as any of the other hard hitting spitters on the label & he’s back to prove any of the doubters dead wrong. Shot straight from Strangeland Studios, which is only one chunk of their massive compound in Kansas City, we see Jehry hard at work, pushing his pen & giving us just a little taste of what he’s been cooking up for his inevitable third release with the label. He’s got hooks & melodies for days as well, which is what got him signed in the 1st place but when you’re around hardcore lyricists like the legendary X-Raided or Joey Cool, who are pictured alongside him as he tears through this onslaught, you gotta bring your A-game & he does so effortlessly every time. This is the beautiful thing about Hip Hop cause regardless of your skin color, all that matters is that you can rap & if you can’t rap with the best of them, it don’t mean shit. I only say that cause I know a lot of people still take issue with certain people participating in the sport but Jehry understands it’s bloodsport & he’s here to make it shed!
