The Weekly Dip 1/21/23
It’s a bit chilly on today’s Dip but we going for a swim anyway & hope you find the strength to join us for we got some cool numbers for you to bask in today!
Brock Seals - Him (Video)
Earlier in the week, I came across the latest & first release of the year from Brock Seals titled “Him,” which has the St Louis native spitting a series of captivating raps while laced down in cowboy attire to settle the case that with the bars and art, he’s delivering he really is him. Nonchalantly, he’s laid back & relaxed with boastful energy throughout the video, showcasing a pedigree of prestigious efforts, making this a sensational viewing and a record to keep in rotation until the next release follows.
Imani Carolyn - Cap’s Anthem (Video)
Celebrating the achievements of hitting one million plays on her debut album while enjoying her born day, Imani Carolyn released the visual treatment to her fan-favorite record “Cap’s Anthem,” which has her lounging around in a beautiful space telling her tale of love, but this is a different type of affection. Walking around in all white like an Angel, she’s experienced so much in her journey to never downplay her success, she’s beyond talented and passionate about her craft, especially when it comes to making sacrifices emotionally, but it ends up with big blessings in the end for her. She’s the captain of her ship, and no one is controlling the destination but her.
Bo Bundy - Devueleme A Mi Chica (Video)
I’ve spoken before about the anticipation to see the full release of Bo Bundy’s rock cover of Hombres G’s “Devueleme A Mi Chica” for quite some time, where many fans have requested to see it too. We’ll a week before dropping his sophomore album, “The Lone Star,” he decided to deliver on giving his fanship one more surprise where at last, the entire video surfaced yesterday evening with Barf behind the directed release that has Bo Bundy living out one of his dreams of being a wrestler while telling the story of someone on the brink of determination. It’s another deep look into Bo Bundy’s mental state, giving us more than what’s on the outside of his personality and entering an inner perspective of his ambition & goals.
MASN - Show Me Luv (Video)
What’s this? A man who actually wants love & affection from a woman, not just sex? In fact, it’s not even crossing his mind, he really just wants to get to know you! All he asks in return is that you keep your promise cause he’s a man of his words & isn’t here to play games with you emotionally. He’s hoping y’all can just kick back, maybe get a few drinks in, roll a few blunts & just coast. He can tell that she’s rather cold though, probably from all her past encounters with men but still he’s attempting to reassure her that he isn’t like the rest though he understands & empathizes with her apprehension. He does however admit that his past encounters with love did drive him to rage though there’s something about this girl that is taming that beast within. He’s finally ready to move forward from that past relationship into something new & hopefully, she’ll be the one.
Izzy93 feat SSG Splurge - Hush (Video)
Continuing his dominance, Izzy93 is back with the follow up to “4:38” & it’s another return to form for the lean laced lyricist. He’s as menacing as they come, with delivery & flow that, sure, may just be him talking that shit but he has everything he needs to back it all up. A lot of rappers don’t be actually doing the shit that they rap about but when he subtly offers these warning shots, you know he ain’t the one to play with, even though he’s just playing with you. He made it out the dirt but although he doesn’t wish to go back, he can easily revert back to his old ways if tested so, you will be well advised not to step to him cause no amount of preparation can prepare you for the world of hurt you’d be stepping into. SSG Splurge only adds to the menace with his nonchalant terror he brings to this ominous production.
Bankreaux - Dollas Over Nem (Video)
Bankreaux is like that silent sniper, we all know he’s been killing shit for a minute now but he hits you with his lyricism so quick that you never really see him coming, then back off into the wind he goes. Lyrically, he’s only ever in tip top form, with his metaphors, syllables & introspective storytelling forever on point as he brings you into his world for another ominous cut that showcases these skills. He’s a DON of this rap shit, choosing “Dollas Over Nem” cause at the end of the day, he don’t really need your respect but you for sure gonna pay him what’s rightfully his. When you rap at such a high level, it makes sense that people wouldn’t wanna be your friend, they get envious over not being able to stand toe to toe with you but Bank could care less cause it was never about making friends to begin with, it’s strictly business.
SwuM & Grimm Doza - Gremlin (Video)
We got any Lo-Fi Hip Hop fans here? If y’all aren’t familiar with Grimm Doza, who’s been bulldozing this subgenre of the game for a few years now then it’s time to get acquainted. With the release of his latest effort “IMMORTAL” still relatively fresh, produced entirely by SwuM, he offers the visual treatment to the standout cut off that record. Straight on his “Gremlin” shit, scaring away anybody who thought once the night time came around that he would stay soft but his nonchalant flow & dense lyricism is as abstract as they come, striking fear into those who aren’t aware of what exactly is attacking their ears. It’s almost like a fever dream whenever he gets to laying these insane rhymes out for you.
RenOne feat REYGUHNA - INSANITY (Video)
Anybody looking for that Horrorcore fix then look no further. RenOne is like the Cthulhu of this rap shit, a beast you wish would never emerge from out the underworld. Here he’s introducing us to another killer to assist him in carrying out his deadly duties in REYGUHNA, who’s more than willing to stain the game with his bloodbath barrage of bars. It’s a very schizophrenic number as they heed the advice of the voices in their heads to bring pure “INSANITY” to the rap game. RenOne comes through swinging his ginsu knife so quickly, he’s able to skin the competition in one fell swoop. If you’re starting your verse this disgusting then there’s no telling how far he’s willing to take it the further you venture into this madness with him. The amount of detail he lays out for what’s about to happen to you is appalling. You almost feel bad for the poor sap who played right into his hand. Just another innocent victim in his bloody pursuit. These two truly do not care for the hurt they’ll be causing the families of these poor souls, they just lost souls themselves.
Zeddy Will - Confidence Is Key (Funny Freestyle) (Video)
Instagram comedian Zeddy Will doing rap now? We so here for it, especially cause it’s clearly poking direct fun at the ridiculous flows & lyrics we tend to hear from most rappers in today’s climate. What’s even more hilarious is that it’s actually a bit of a banger, even though he’s totally just dicking around. Every single bar in this comical little cut will get a chuckle out of you at the very least, he’s just quite the character, with the lanky look to follow. Although he is confident in his capabilities, he doesn’t take himself too seriously, a skill I personally wish rappers would attain. I miss when rappers would add that humor to their lyrics, there’s only a very limited few who still manage to do so with their music. It’s not really the kind of record you’d expect to be on our annual Dip but it was too funny to not give it some love.
Sami & The Engine - Nah It’s Cool (Video)
After blessing listeners with their debut EP last year, Sami & The Engine are back with their first single of the year & it’s a bit of a tearjerker, sure to yank at your heartstrings, maybe even snip them with its raw & honest lyrics that are all too relatable. The ending of a relationship is never easy, there’s just truly no nice way to go about it, somebody is gonna end up hurt regardless. She can’t seem to understand where it all went wrong. She knows she made her fair share of mistakes but was it all just exaggerated by the dumper? When you don’t get that closure, you tend to have alot of questions about the dissolution but nobody to ask them to. As much as she may want to, there’s really nothing else to say, what’s done is done. You want so badly for this person to understand how true your love still rings for them but you just can’t find the strength to knock down those walls put up as a result. She knew though that this day was to come, maybe not as quickly & unexpectedly as it did but she could just tell they were slowly & painfully drifting apart. I personally could never understand wanting to be friends with a past lover so the whole concept of the record strikes all the right chords like, nah I’m cool on that, it’s cool, you do you & I’ll do me, it was good times. It’s a sad but mature outlook on love.
