The Weekly Dip 4/8/22
Hope everybody has been having a banger of a week cause we’re about to end the week to bleed into the weekend with multiple bangs, bangers, slappers, blappers, whatever you wish to call them but know this, you’re not gonna not wanna say hello to all these heat waves we’ve compiled here for you today, fittingly so cause by the time you read this, the temperatures will have risen!
K Shiday - Bag Year (Video)
After delivering her 3-track EP “Big Boss Sh*t” & a visual to accompany the release, K Shiday gives us one more surprise from the project as she dropped the visual treatment to her track “Bag Year.” The video was directed by Tru Media, where they have the San Antonio rapstress showing out with motorcycles & SLABs in the background while she looks stunning to the touch and flexing on the haters. It’s another excellent drop from K Shiday, and one that I know will have plenty of views over the weekend to see it somewhere in the 2.5K or more range. Expect more surprises and releases from K Shiday in the upcoming months; I’m sure more music is preparing to be announced very soon. - Frank Campos
MsGold - 100K (Video)
Earlier this week, MsGold dropped a new video titled “100K” with TrapvisionzFilms behind the lens for this sensational release that is already seeing a massive start of views begin to stack up whereby the end of the month, it could match the song title. Dustin Cavazos samples Shawty Lo’s “Dey Know” to make sure this single looks as luxurious as MsGold, whose prestigious raps in this visual make her glow like gold. Her boastful attitude when it comes to dead presidents is displayed here in the viewing and why she’s been running the rap game in the mix of being successful. You can sense her charged-up energy, which I’m sure assists her in making this rap shit look effortless for her to drop heavy hitters like this on any given occasion. If you aren’t familiar with MsGold, then it’s best to start now by paying attention here & checking out her latest release. - Frank Campos
(Hed) P.E. - Bartenders (feat. Dropout Kings, DJ Lethal)
Rap & Rock N Roll have always been a match made in heaven when it comes to genre bending, there’s so many classics from around that early 2000’s era, where bands like such were very popular, some of those bands were very underrated in my opinion though. (Hed) Planet Earth is one of those bands, though they did find major success with their classic “Bartender”, so when lead vocalist Jared announced they did a re-loaded version of this classic, I’ll admit, I was a bit skeptical but silly of me cause they’ve really upped the ante on this classic. The original alone will blow out your speakers but this amped up re-doing of it, you’re gonna need new speakers everytime you throw this mug on repeat! Dropout Kings really did their thing on this remake as well & it’s just nice to see bands collaborating, you don’t see it too often, especially (Hed) being such legends I’m sure the boys in DK really look up to & truthfully, it’s kinda all in house, being how closely affiliated (Hed) is with Suburban Noize Records, legendary label & home to the legendary Kottonmouth Kings & then add DJ Lethal to the mix, who scratched for other legendary acts like House of Pain & Limp Bizkit & you got one hell of a reminder of just how classic this song actually is!
7xvethegenius - Always Thank God (feat. Trae Tha Truth)
There’s so many women out here absolutely killing it & they don’t deserve to fly under the radar so if you haven’t tapped into what 7xve has been doing, even beyond her appearance on Conway the Machine’s “God Don’t Make Mistakes”, which she absolutely shattered, she continues to break that stained glass to make mosaic patterns on the Trae Tha Truth assisted “Always Thank God”. Not only is the production on this record strum your heartstrings like they were part of an angel’s harpsichord but her introspective flow is catching her better angels before they hit the ground. She’s blessed & grateful though she’s still striving for more but is accepting whatever it is the higher power has to offer. Trae Tha Truth is so underrated as well so to hear him alongside her, just matching that soulful energy with his deep, gruff vocals, coupled with the real spill he’s leaking all over the beat like pouring one out for those fallen with every line, I mean, what a beautiful track they’ve blessed us with here & it’s definitely one that’ll make you look into 7xve more if you’ve been sleeping.
The Future Kingz - DIRTY (feat. Hopsin)
What an introduction to the Future Kingz this single is, being that I had never come across this talented crew til then & of course, it was the Hopsin feature that caught my attention, that man deserves his respect by the way & its about time we give him his flowers, especially after his performance on this record, which honestly blew me away cause I’m not used to hearing Hop hop on records like this, it really just shows how tapped in with the young talent he is. The Future Kingz are all absolutely going stupid over this beat & these visuals, treating this school that Hopsin is at least trying to complete his janitorial duties for, only to be interrupted by these lyrical hooligan treating this school like it’s Kangstaville. What they don’t know is that Hop is a hooligan himself & together, these boys wreak havoc in the hallways. Definitely an anthem for all the B-Boys & B-Girls & I very much appreciate them incorporating that element into this record.
Mélat - Happy Hour
Melat’s “Happy Hour” is one of my favorite songs of all time, it’s even in my personal playlist, it just has this nostalgic feel to it, which I have a deep affinity for, yet it’s modern, a sound I describe as “future vintage”. Now I’ll be honest, since it dropped, I was hoping we would get a visual for it, it just felt deserving of one so I held onto the hope of an eventual one. Much to my chagrin, on April 1st, she pulled a fast one on me & all her supporters when she released a video explaining her recent hair change. I of course click the video, thinking nothing about what day it was & what do you know, it’s actual the visual I’ve been waiting so long for & it is so worth the wait! You’re a sneaky pete Melat but we love you! These visuals are not only fun, silly, not to mention she’s so adorable throughout these different roles she’s playing but the message at the forefront of the sentiment is powerful. Change is indeed a very troubling concept for some, myself included so to have those troubles alleviated by someone who not only understands that but does so to the point where she feels the need to bring some comfort & light back into these dark times we’ve all been living in, she’s just the most beautiful soul isn’t she?
Wallice - 90s American Superstar (Video)
Why, why, why, are the best songs always this concise? I don’t mean that in a complainy way but man, it just seems that a lot of songs I absolutely adore are just these short bursts of energy! I fully see why, especially in this climate, it’s necessary cause now I’m craving more from Wallice. Her latest single under the Dirty Hit label, which I’m glad to see them still expanding their roster with fresh new talent, but her latest single “90s American Superstar” is the sweetest blast from the past! I just love the nostalgic, indie alternative feels of this record. It’s also nice to see her & her bandmates doing their thing in the tour diary of a music video she’s blessed us with here. I miss seeing bands in their element like that. They are absolutely giddy in these visuals & reasonably so cause this is the most upbeat pop, even a little bit of punk is in the mix, smasher of a record I’ve heard all week & now I’m even more excited to see what her eventual full length under the label will sound like & judging from the cover art of this one, which really has that Dirty Hit style to it, if you follow the label like that then you know what I’m talking about, we’re not too far away from getting hit with another massive record from out the indie juggernaut.
Jarren Benton - Judas (feat. Oba Rowland)
It’s been a minute since I’ve personally heard from Jarren Benton, to be honest, I fell off hard once Funk Volume liquidated as a label but I do know he continued on with his career afterwards & never slowed down, I just wasn’t tapped in like that anymore & now I see how stupid that was of me so I hope Jarren could forgive me. The man hasn’t lost one ounce of his sheer skill & wit, he’s still the same insane lyricist he was on all those past records of his. One thing about Jarren though, is he just knows how to have fun on a record while still giving you that raw skillset he possesses. It’s nice when artists take themselves serious but not too too seriously. Oba Rowland absolutely obliterates this beat as well, matching Jarren’s energy quickly as the two help one another to dispose of these bodies they can’t seem to stop catching on this beat. The editing in the visuals as well is marvelous, those shots of the car pulling away in the beginning during Oba’s verse, are so masterfully executed.
JMAC the Dragon - Stay Hungry (feat. Joney Fieldz) (Single)
I like my rappers to be famished & to never lose that hunger, I want that stomach to stay grumbling, much to the disdain of others, like you got a Rottweiler in the pit of your stomach, rabid as ever, like fucking Cujo, out for blood & those are exactly the vibes we get from the latest offering of the Dragon. Think James Franco in “The Interview”, “I think it’s a dragon dog”, laugh out loud. But it truly is comical how easy it is for these two to eat rappers up like it’s nothing to them cause it isn’t. We all know JMAC stay jabbing forks in the necks of his sorry excuses for competitors like that one scene from “Pineapple Express”, if you know you know but the addition of Joney Fieldz was an excellent touch. I love that he doesn’t just put anybody on his records, he introduces us to new talent that can actually keep up with his sharp ass lyricism. Joney does just that as the two go on the hunt for their prey, stomping throughout territory that isn’t theirs & turning it into the valley of the hyenas! JMAC says he has more singles to be released after this so we’re excited for more offerings, especially if he’s gonna be coming like this, this beat alone is fucking colossus!
Vic Spencer - Contemporary Section (Video)
It’s been a minute since I last heard from Vic Spencer. That just goes to show that, there’s so many great MC’s in this culture, that I can’t wrap my head around anyone complaining about the state of it but I digress, Vic is criminally underrated & not just cause of his appearances with dudes like Twista & Sean Price. Chicago is home to so much talent & it’s about time we give Vic his flowers as well. His latest offering is a subtle Boom Bap head bopper of hopping ass record, I mean you can’t help but nod to this one, I see why they call him Doc da Mindbenda. Vic’s flow is very conversational & that’s so we can heed each sentiment he’s so graciously sharing with us. He’s just so separate from the flock, he’s own entity, his syllable play & wordplay remains dangerous as can be & with a lead single like this, he & Doc’s upcoming collaboration “Still Here”, dropping very soon, will certainly be another one for the books in Vic’s archive
