The Weekly Dip 11/12

It’s the month that keeps on giving so just sit back, relax & indulge us as we take you through even more beautiful music courtesy of all these beautiful artists who were gracious enough to bless us with their presence & talent.

Kevin McGee, My’Key Iso - SOPU

If you haven’t been living under a rock here in Texas then you know damn well what that sample is & I don’t know about you, but I absolutely adore when artists pay forward that homage, especially to one of our fallen legends. Kevin has been on a tear all year, offering us a slew of singles that continue to push the envelope in terms of his versatility, I mean none of these records sound the same & that’s exactly how I prefer it, keep me intrigued you know! My’Key comes through absolutely dripping, the candy paint is melting over like ice cream due to his intensely swaggering heat he’s distributing effortlessly in this verse!

Zayland - Wish We Had A Chance

On his third effort of the year, Zayland continues to flex his versatility as an artist, this time around professing his yearning for a long lost love. He’s pining over the time that’s being wasted by him being out & about making this name for himself but rather a living for the both of them, just hoping she’d be able to see it for what it is & accept him for who he is. He’s still the same guy she fell in love with but it’s hard to manage a long distance relationship, especially if all you’re seeing is the glitz & glamor, all the girls over him which he clearly has no interest in. Unfortunately he’s torn between the two but ultimately is gonna keep both feet in this business & hey, sometimes sacrifices have to be made, no matter how painful, he only wishes they had more time for her to maybe come around, hopefully time will permit them.

Angel Cintron - Blue Lights

Angel lately has been taking us further into her vulnerabilities & she continues to do so with the tenderly subtle “Blue Lights”. Firstly, I greatly appreciate her pushing for men to be more open about their struggles, to not be afraid to show emotion, urging us to break this silly stereotype that we have to be masculine, fucking macho man 24/7, as a lot of us have been brought up to be. It can be a challenge for us to be so open with our emotions cause often that vulnerability is seen as a weakness but Angel is sincere when she implies that it is rather a strength & an attractively beneficial one at that. Once again, she brought tears to my eyes cause I definitely needed to hear this from such a strong woman cause having a good woman by your side, she’ll force you to confront that pain you keep compartmentalized until it surges out of the artesian well & that unconditional love, if you’ve ever experienced it, is like nothing you’ve ever felt.

Julian Skiboat - Life’s Too Short

Fret not my fellow sad sacks, life is too short to pine over things that are out of our control so let’s just appreciate the little things in life, all of its beautiful subtleties like the fact that no matter how sad life may seem, the sun is still gonna shine regardless, it’s only night for a few hours after all. Julian has this way of getting you to always look at the brighter side of things but the tone of which he packages it all still has this bittersweet feeling to it, I can’t help but feel sad yet happy that I’m experiencing both emotions simultaneously upon hearing him softly explain to us that, it’s all good & even if it’s not at the present moment, it’ll get better, just give it time & have patience.

No Rome - I Want U

I swear, the 1975 has to have something to do with these new No Rome records we’ve been getting lately, after all, they are on the same label & they even had a hand in their other label mate beabadoobee’s most recent EP. Following up with the powerfully distorted “When She Comes Around”, we get some more of that distortion but packaged in a much more digestible poppy way. It’s a very simple little number but it has the 1975 written all over it so whether or not they had a part in it, he’s definitely been heavily influenced by them & we’re all here for it & can’t wait to hear what more sweet nostalgia he has planned on his upcoming “It’s All Smiles” album!

Day Wave - Where Do You Go

Since 2015 I believe, Day Wave has been cranking out some real beautifully catchy indie tunes, his sound is just so infectious & I feel elated everytime his music hits my radar. This latest single from him though is like a lot of his music, pretty straightforward in terms of its lyricism but even in its simplicity, you gotta appreciate how easily the man can craft an indie pop hit. Where do you usually go is the question at hand, that way when they have some time, they can go there & just let loose of all the things that are keeping them shackled mentally. My favorite single of his since “Stuck”, which I highly recommend as well!

RenOne - Rendom EP

RenOne is a dear friend who’s been putting in work for quite some time & last night, he dropped off an EP full of random records he’d been working on, just to show a little more versatility as to what he’s capable of. Starting with “Emotion”, he deep dives into him being such an emotionally unavailable person & though he can be vulnerable, he doesn’t quite often show it unless he feels like it. “Last Dayz” is a club banger where he urges you to live like there’s no tomorrow, will you be satisfied with what you’ve accomplished in such a short window or will you just wallow in your own regrets, your choice. Drewdini comes through to offer a wavy ass hook to “Clock” which showcases his girl crazy issues, as well as “Been Thinkin’”, which is another club banger, all in all I’d say he’s well on his way to even more promising tunes!

Big Texas feat Andrew Kelly - Who Do It Better

Big Texas & Andrew Kelly have finally collided & they have a very stern question to ask, “Who Do It Better” & we strictly talking bars, which if you’re a Barbarian like I am, you’ll know these two are at the hilt of hardcore lyricism so to hear them both sparring is quite the pleasure. Big Texas is such a bully on the mic, the imprint of his boots are left all over the beat once he’s done trampling it like it’s Plankton or some shit, only few will get that reference. Then Andrew Kelly of course comes through & absolutely scathes everything that may be standing in his way, the man is rapping machine so it’s only right that he continuously establishes his dominance on a record, a nice little tease before he hits us with his upcoming “CHUM” project & who knows what else Texas got planned, it’s looking scary for opponents though, I’ll tell you that!
