The Weekly Dip 10/15

This disclaimer, we’re keeping more concise this time around cause the records we have for you to dip into today, we want you to jump in their waters immediately, there’s no time for skinny dipping so just dive in with whatever you got on & wade in these waters!

Tommy Gold - Fleece

“A man who don’t take care of family can never be rich”, Tommy Gold waxes eloquently over his soulful new single, it’s a familial affair we have here as he’s further cementing his legacy as one of the coldest names out. His lyricism is as swift as the wind at his back & his words are delivered with such elegance that you have no choice but to heed what his introspective pen is doing here, it’s quite impressive to simply hear him reflect on life as it currently is for him. It’s not perfect & he’s almost certain it probably never will be but in his heart, he knows it’ll all be more than worth it in the long run. Longevity is the name of the game & his is inevitable.

I’ve seen plenty of people complain about hooks being too wordy but I guess that all depends on what’s being said & his hook here packs as much wisdom as his verse do. When it comes to skill, he’s a wolf rocking the clothing of any of the sheeps who may have tried to fleece him in the past, those demons of his will never have the upper hand as long as he’s loving himself this much. He, like many of us who are elevating in life, never thought he’d make it this far but unlike many, he doesn’t sound complacent, only eager to strive for more cause there’s always gonna be more to attain in this life.

Rather than wallowing, he’s choosing to turn his heavy heart into half a mil, a beautiful sentiment that’s only further exemplified by the color contrast in these visuals, not everything is black & white in this life after all. The shots on the butterflies speak volumes as we are literally witnessing a man, a caterpillar blossoming out of his cocoon, spreading his wings & just basking in his own glow, which is far too bright for what is lurking in the shadows to consume him. You know that feeling when you’re descending from the highest of highs, this record feels just like that afterglow, especially when the beat slows down at the halfway point & we really get to feel him heed his own words of affirmation. Look at all his manifested because of it & think of what more he has left to.

TheLo$er - Lie To Me

This ain’t no Lo$er I’ve ever heard of, the way the man is flowingly floating so peacefully above Dago Beats soothing production here, proves that he’s all winner baby, his girl in the video will tell you that. You ain’t gotta lie to kick it with TheLo$er, you just gotta keep it real but that can be hard for a lot of these fakes though it’s clear that he doesn’t associate himself with anybody of that nature but sometimes, a lie couldn’t hurt nobody, sometimes we don’t always wanna hear the truth, especially when we’re fucking up so why not live in this fantasy for a bit, I’m sure all the dreams he has will come true if she’d just play along with it.

I love to see artists fresh in their element, not no big fancy schmancy studio set up, just a mic, computer, good weed & beautiful people are all he needs to let his introspective pen ride the beat out as our favorite Lo$er here reflects upon his life & the experiences endured, the lessons learned. It’s clear to me that, he may be freestyling here but it’s coming straight from out his soul so it may as well be written or maybe it is, whatever the case, it’s coming from his soul regardless as he allows his heart to be open for all to see. There’s no telling what greatness a man can do when he has a strong & good woman by his side & although he’s trying to evacuate from his “sucker for love” persona, he’ll find his way back.

I’m gonna be completely honest with you, I had never really heard of this cat, shout-out the actual cat in the video, I got a soft spot for them, but I had never really heard of this cat til this video/record hit my radar & I’m glad it did cause it’s a glorious feat for this good brother in all of its magnificent simplicity. He’s so concise with what he’s trying to convey here & The Girl V captures these moments with such grace when it comes to her work behind that lens. We here at Wavez look forward to hearing more of this heartfelt lyricism from this elegantly talented artist & as for me personally, I’m about to do some more research to further prove to myself that this man is a winner cause this right here has already planted the seed & I’m sure he’ll only continue to water it.

Paris Price & Dende - Love Jones

Now Dende, I’m familiar with but Paris Price, this is my personal first introduction to this brother & let me just say, I know I’m gonna like a song within the 1st 10 seconds, sometimes less & that was the case upon pressing play on this record. Even the brother’s moniker cause everybody knows I love alliteration but enough of the little details, the hopeless romanticism of this record, you get as lost as he is once it seeps into your ears. He’s clearly jonesing for intimacy, something real because he’s never had success in relationships, except for whenever those ships passing through the night eventually & inevitably sink as they always have. Love for him has never been a safe haven so why would he ever step out his comfort zone, he already stepped out the door, sounds like an avoidant to me.

This is a smooth little banger he & Dende have on their hands & the content of the lyrics will have plenty of people drawing correlations from their love life to his. Sometimes I even struggle with the fact that, maybe I am an avoidant myself, maybe I like he is just meant to be alone cause it’s scary to step out your comfort zone & let your guard down, especially if you’ve had your heart broken on numerous occasions. If that’s the case then all that “Love Jones” shit doesn’t feel comfortable to you, it may as well be foreign at that point. Though personally I feel he has stepped out his comfort zone by even admitting this about himself.

Sincerity can be scary as hell but at least he’s being honest with this girl rather than continue leading her on, it’s gonna hurt either way so why not just rip that bandaid off? Maybe it was only lust & not love, maybe he just needs time & space, whatever the case, it’s in everyone’s best interest that they just go their separate ways & it’s not like it doesn’t hurt him as well cause clearly, what’s underneath the surface is a man who wouldn’t mind intimacy but he’s yet to learn how to accept that intimacy rather than run from it like he always has. It is indeed going to take some time & space & hopefully she can be patient with him as he figures himself out & understanding if he never comes around fore he seems steadfast in his ways.

A-Wall - Loverboy - Acoustic

Taking it back to his 2019 subtle, electronica laced Lo-Fi groove, we now get the stripped down version of an already impeccable record. I also appreciate how he includes the original version, so as to make it easy to hear how they both differ from one another, plus directly correlate cause, both versions are extremely heartfelt. I love the video game esque cover art cause love can be a game at times, a tricky one at that & we unfortunately don’t always have control over how it all plays out but he’s still along for the ride, even though he’s the one who’s left hurting in the end.

Me personally, I love this version so much more than the original, those strings just add so much more poignancy to the already bittersweet lyrics. I relate to the good brother here so damn much, I too am what they call, a hopeless romantic. He has maybe too much love to offer or maybe he’s just been offering it to the wrong person, whatever the case, we got a beautiful rendition of an already beautiful record because of it.

Taylor Belle - Learn Me

Does anybody ever take the time to really learn about their partner or are we just so eager about the idea of love that we get lost inside of that instead? Taylor Belle here is yearning for a much deeper intimacy other than what’s on surface level for her partner to see. That’s much more powerful than any sort of lust or longing for sex, she stated that when she’s with this person, she feels spiritually naked, now that’s beautiful. Anybody can be naked physically but this person is nurturing her soul the more they get to know her like the back of their hand & with that, this relationship will healthily last in the long run, so take note fellas & ladies, get to really know your partner before you start seeing all those damn red flag emojis.

A-Wax, King Iso - Bag Up

King Iso is currently on tour with his label mates over at Strange Music but during one of their stops, they made sure to further capitalize on the magic that he & A-Wax always manage to cook up whenever they link. They already blessed us with their full length collab album under the group moniker The Brazy Bunch but before “Written In Blood”, A-Wax blessed us with a “one of many” solo effort “Most Hated” & on there, yet another Iso collab, probably one of their sauciest records as well titled “Bag Up” which finds both MC’s swinging their braggadocio around with the utmost gusto. You’ll find all artists on the tour, minus Tech, he’s probably resting while all these good brothers turn up in a simple yet exhilarating night, full of incessant rhymes & debauchery.

Snail Mail - Ben Franklin

Snail Mail are currently prepping their sophomore effort after their excellent 2018 debut “Lush”, entitled “Valentine” & not too long after they instantly impressed upon the release of the title track, we get hit with an even better record titled “Ben Franklin”. It’s an infectious little bop which finds Lindsey regretting her efforts into making something work that was probably doomed from the jump. Lindsey looks like an absolute badass with that python I presume constricting itself around her neck. It’s clear they deviated from the party they wrecked back in the “Valentine” visuals & are now taking their time back home to recollect their thoughts. If the record sounds anything like these past 2 singles, which I’m sure it will, they might just blow their debut magnum opus out the water & replace it with this album.

Shelly Knicks, URL Prisoner - Janet Jackson

Somebody get a hold of “Janet Jackson” & show her how Shelly Knicks is keeping her legacy alive & well in this beautiful homage. I swear, anything Shelly Knicks does is incredible & he don’t drop often so you know whenever he does, it’s serious. On this URL Prisoner produced single, we find Knicks at his most galaxial as this infatuating woman is taking him towards another planet, hell, another dimension with her beauty, her beauty is enough to make stars explode cause they can’t handle her radiation just beaming off of her. When he sees her, it’s like he’s removing his helmet in space but somehow can still breathe & his auto tuned crooning will for sure make her fall back down to earth. Trent Owens of course has his hand in all the great visuals but he made sure to go extra interplanetary on here to bring Shelly’s vision to life. We don’t know what else Shelly has planned but the versatility he brings in every aspect of the music, from the sound to the visuals is always enthralling to witness.
