HOODLUM - BROWN IN AMERIKKKA (Video)

I think it’s about that time we start acknowledging HOODLUM as one of the best lyricists of our time, I’m certain those of us who know, are aware of it but I don’t think enough people realize just how dangerous his pen game is. It’s as dangerous as being “B.I.A”, taken from last years “LOST FILES” tape, he & Retro Moy bless us with another double visual to hold us over until the next album. Produced by none other than Ihateyouhawtboy, HOODLUM takes this time to mix his street sensibilities with social commentary, opening up with a moment of silence for the migrants we lost not too long ago here in our beautiful city of San Antonio. I love that he throws that reminder in there cause a lot of people would rather just forget that, as if these aren’t significant losses to our community. It deserves to continue being shoved in our faces until something is done about it.

HOODLUM fears no man other than God. When you’re doing like him & being successful in a righteous way, you become a target, whether that be envy of people in his city, which is sad, because if anything, he’s actually giving back & never standing in the way of his people going out & getting theirs or police targeting him, I refer you back to a segment in his No Jumper interview where he recalls one interesting encounter I feel he handled with grace given the circumstances. HOODLUM don’t allow these things to phase him, even though deep down, you know it irks him to be castigated as such, merely for the color of his skin, let alone his appearance or the content of his music some people refuse to understand or at least empathize with.

He’s not the thug people may try to portray him as, he’s a member of the community & more so a leader. The way he mixes that social commentary with the bars is just immaculate. He’s speaking directly to his people, acknowledging that, we’ve been fucked since all the way back to the days of the pilgrims but still we stand tall with that power in numbers. They can’t get rid of us because they need us, immigrant or no, who cares, we’re just people trying to make a living, trying to escape the harsh realities of our past lives back home & build anew. I don’t believe people realize or even wish to acknowledge the blood, sweat & tears are people went through just to get here, simply because they wanted better for their families & here in the jolly old Amerikkka, a place known for its spirit of generosity, you know that shit we’re always told, it doesn’t exist but we still do & they can go ahead & try to take our culture but they’ll never be a part of it.
