Mateo Sun - I Call You Sun (EP)

Since his 2021 single, “Closer,” we hadn’t seen much from Mateo Sun besides a few features on tracks & visuals here and there. It was bizarre to see him away from dropping any new music, but we were always under the impression that he had to be planning or working on something to drop in the new year & it looks like we were right. In the middle of last week, Mateo Sun dropped a new EP titled “I Call You Sun,” a 6-track self-produced project filled to the brim with everything you love to hear from Big Sun: boastful raps with his signature hoarse vocals that mixed nicely with a set of heavy-flexing lines. It’s pressed together with mixing by Duvin & features from Izzy93, Young Mike & Rxalu Loaded to assist him in starting the month of April with a favorable release.

Starting off the introduction with ALBe Back’s line from the movie “ATL” also being his producer tag, Mateo Sun starts applying his syrup-sipping vocals over this low drumbeat that is used for him to showcase that his bars ain’t lost its touch, so for the haters that went back to sleeping on him it’s time to wake your ass up again. “Told Ya” is classic Big Sun record at its finest, speaking with the doja in his spliff & the dirty soda in his cup. He’s expressing that he’s still one of the hardest artists out here in the city, running laps around his opps. He’s speaking from the heart to have you all know where he came from and what he represents whenever he starts spitting. Wordplays and metaphors are something we’ve seen him conquer on tracks before, but here he takes it to a whole new level especially shifting over to the Izzy93-featured record “Big Dogs.” This track would be the second time we’ve heard both of them together, and it’s exciting to see another featured hit happen on the project. Izzy93 is going off the top, so this ain’t no written flow and to accompany right behind him is Mateo, who runs up the check and sends it right back to Izzy has they both go head to head on the release for a solid combative single. The same thing could be said for the Young Mike & Rxalu featured records since they bring a bit more hungrier Mateo out on the tracks and make him pack more punches on his flows; not saying he doesn’t do that now, but he definitely brings more power to the bars when he has great artists align with him. One track I can’t forget to mention is the high complexity of “Global Warming” it’s one of my favorites from Mateo since it sounds like a nuclear weapon is about to go off, which is precisely what we get in the record. Mateo isn’t here to play on this joint, it’s an insane track from start to finish and one that symbolizes just how far he’s going in his artistry. This isn’t the same Mateo Sun we’re used to hearing; he has some growth behind his words, including choosing to do his own production, which I respect. We know this is just the beginning, and more from him will soon be revealed.

Mateo has already been getting great feedback on the project, and I think more will come in waves on Friday when he drops the live performance of “Cutting Up” courtesy of The Wrap-Up series. Expect more great things to come from Mateo this year, but while you wait, get some more plays running up on his EP here while sharing it on all social media avenues.
