Kue Millz - EGOtistical II (EP)
On his first solo project since 2016, Kue Millz immediately ensures longtime listeners that, this batch of records was more than worth the wait. He had a lot of life to experience throughout this time gap & it’s not like he was just gone gone, well with his work done as a member of the almighty FRITOGANG but as a solo artist, was definitely waiting in the wings for the right moment to come back & remind them of his strengths as a stand-alone act. He had all the right people around him, clearly throughout this process & as a result, he’s an entirely different beast than he once was. Opening up with “Run It Back”, he details his re-emergence with such haunting gusto, putting the fear of the God he is into the non-believers. His gospel here is a stern testament to him knowing full well that he’s here to stand the test of time, whether or not people take notice, doesn’t mean his spirit is looming over the music scene. He’s not even carrying it on his back, it’s sitting firmly in his lap.
It’s been “So Long” before he felt comfortable enough to slide back into town but he had a lot of growing up to do, as detailed throughout this somber & reflective number. He had no choice but to say so long to his past life & move on to greener pastures. He’s even holding himself accountable for a few of the reasons why he had to leave, mostly because he didn’t have the right people in his corner. He takes this time to reflect upon his poor decision making in terms of who he allowed into his circumference & although they may feel a way about him leaving them behind, if it was really all love, they would be happy for him finding his lot in life & making it out of the stagnancy they’re unfortunate still complacent with living in. They can try to bring him back down to their level as much as they please but they will never catch him “Lackin’”. It’s confusing but nonetheless amusing to him the division that’s come from him paving a better way for himself. You can’t please everyone though & not everyone is headed where he’s going or even willing to for that matter. It’s all just lessons he needed to redirect his focus on that which truly matters.
Is it safe to call Kue “Jesus” at this point? He’s definitely making the angels weep with his God tier level of elite rhyming throughout these records. He’s one of those lyricists who doesn’t give you a single bar of filler, each rhyme is blow after blow. That “Mercy” reference will leave the haters speaking in tongues. Records like this just showcases how much he doesn’t have shit left to prove but does so anyway cause he just can. He’s still in love with it enough to continue pushing his pen the furthest he possibly can. He’s nothing like these other rappers, though they wish they could be everything he is. That “budget/budge it” homophone he used to get this point across is just, why would they even try with this man, you know? His music is that “Soul Food”, that ambrosia as he closes out this EP with a little more reflecting & accountability taking. He’s forgiven himself for who he used to be, before he finally found his lot in life, as well as the love of his life. There’s nothing like a good woman who will set you right back onto your rightful course. A beautifully soaring way to end this new chapter in his life & career. It can only go up from here.
