Meztli Zambrano - Naked (EP)
Don’t you just love when fresh, new talent hits your radar? Meztli has slowly been emerging from her cocoon & is now fully ready to blossom into the butterfly she was born to be, ready to make listeners hearts flutter with the release of her debut EP “Naked”. Now these 4 songs she’s blessed us with here are some of her most intimate pieces yet as she continues to push herself musically. Opening up with the atmospheric slow burning love balled “With You”, where we find her yearning to become more closer with her partner. Her vocals really showcase her pining for the two to be in sync forever, though she’s aware this isn’t likely. She just wants this person to tell her what she wants to hear, perhaps, even if insincere, all that matters is that they’re together for the time being. The incorporation of the piano & the chimes, coupled with her breathy vocals really make you feel like your heart is skipping beats.
She continues to bare her heart & soul on “Naked” as she lies alone at night, wondering where it all went wrong. She can’t hide her pain, this person burnt her too bad to be able, yet part of her knows herself enough to realize that, if they reached out to her at this very moment, she’d probably welcome them back with warm embrace, maybe just to fill the void they left in her when they left. She longs for the day her partner can be emotionally vulnerable with her rather than avoiding her, it’s scary she knows, but it’s better than these back & forth games they’ve been playing, those can go to hell as far as she’s concerned. They know where to find her whenever they’re ready to finally open up to her fully. It’s a beautiful ode to wanting more emotional safety in a relationship. Isn’t that what we’re all looking for to some degree?
She’s slowly losing the fight in her cause, what is she even fighting for if she’s the only one fighting to keep the relationship work? It’d be easier to just let this person go, as difficult as it still is to let go of someone you still harbor an attachment to. Even though just an interlude, it does what’s needed as the emotion continues to build up only to slowly come tumbling back down. There’s no need to remind her of the love lost, she thinks about it everyday, all the what if’s & what could’ve beens. Closing things off with emotionally mature “Yesterday”, we find Meztli making peace with their relationship running its course & slowly but surely picks up the pieces in order to build herself back up. The instrumentation, the musicality of this final record really exemplifies that in all of its glory. Even though she’ll always yearn for yesterday, when their love was still amicable, she knows the only way to move is forward.
