Yung Lou - Reignition (Album)

Yung Lou been putting in work for a minute & on his 4th solo effort, considering it’s predecessors were both an EP with “Parking Lot Preachin’” & a mixtape with “City Lights”, his “Reignition” is kicked into high gear. Off rip, we get the title track, which sets the mood for the record, Lou takes us through his journey to get to this point, reflecting on his younger days with this letter to himself. From people hating on him in high school when he was still on the come up, to which he kinda just brushes off, he had bigger fish to fry, a close associate of his at the time had just signed a deal while at the same time, he caught a case. Even under this immense pressure, Lou managed to overcome & he credits his faith in God for the shift throughout this soulful opening.

Christians can make club music? Who said they couldn’t get down in the name of the Lord? On “I Can See It”, it can be seen as Lou talking to a girl at 1st but it immediately becomes clear he’s talking about God, calling on Chris B to assist him in preaching to the youth or anybody who may be willing to hear the good word. On “I Found You”, Lou sounds ever so grateful that he’s finally found God again after being lost for so long, same for Modyist & Drew Anderson, these brothers have clearly come from a past chock full of experiences that would’ve broken down anyone lesser but was necessary for them to endure in order to find their way back around to big guns upstairs.

“If I Should Die” is a thought that hasn’t crossed my mind in a while so I’m glad Lou replanted the seed, especially at the rate I had been going in my life, he’s clearly slowed down yet he’s still going, just at his own pace, not rushing through life like he once was, just hell bent for the leather, possibly addicted to the chaos. Of course, we all know Lou is a Texas boy so it wouldn’t be a Yung Lou album if we didn’t get at least one traditional Texas record & we get that with “Bible On The Dash”. The Chopped N Screwed hook is perfection, same with the swanging production, as well as the guest features in Holy Fiyah & Prolific, who knew this sound could have such a unique & holy spin on it.

Yung Lou finally has it all now that he’s for real for once in his life, that life that he was leading before was fun while it lasted I’m sure, but eventually, after a while of overindulgence, it’s only gonna result in you crashing into burnout. Lou like all of his has done some dirt & has had to suffer penance for those sins but he clearly heeded what God had to teach him & as a result, overcame those consequences, much to any devil’s disdain. Rhezurekt as well slides through with an excellent verse, asking his people to stop speaking evil of one another for that is not what we were sent here to do, that’s not ministry as he puts it so do you want to be “Saved By His Grace” or not?

At some point in our lives, we’re gonna have to “Surrender” & fall to our knees to his mercy, I feel like enough life will have you begging for his love & guidance, I’ve personally always tip toed that line but hearing beautiful people like Lou speak his truth directly to a listener like me, definitely plants the thought of consideration in my mind. Records like “Where Is Our Love” kinda lift that numb feeling I’ve surely gained after seeing the things I’ve seen, this is crazy world we’re living in & it can all end like that so maybe we should try to do as much good as we possibly can on our limited time here on Earth.

On “Lied To Me”, Lou & JayFloo belt out an auto tuned ode to people who’ve deceived them in their past lives but rather than holding onto the grudges I’m sure they once had a firm grasp on, they’ve learned to forgive but that doesn’t mean they’ll ever forget, that sting that still lingers won’t allow them to. It would be a “Wrong Move” for you to question who he’s become just cause you’re still living in the past, that jealousy could have life pulling it’s rug right from up under you so be careful with your decisions, take it from them cause they’re trying to save you from experiencing the things they’ve had to. Lou knows his time is slowly approaching as he’s “Drifting Away” as the days go by, this life is a rough one but he’s not going out without a fight, this pain of his will not be a prospered weapon.
