beabadoobee - Our Extended Play (EP)
When I heard that beabadoobee was set to release a new EP produced & co-written with Matty Healy & George Daniel of the 1975, whom she’s label mates with on the underrated label Dirty Hit. The 1975 fan in me was so elated & it’s not like I haven’t been a fan of hers either; I really became a strong one after her “Fake It Flowers” album dropped, which if you haven’t heard, you should cause it’s a very poignant album & her best, at least until this EP came along, you can really hear the 1975 influence all over it, but beabadoobee puts her own little twist on it, she just sounds so good on these four records.
“Last Day On Earth” was written before the pandemic began if I recall her saying, I could be wrong, but I know that it’s been my pandemic anthem for a while now. It’s just a sweet, simple little number about what she’d do if it was her last day on earth & that’s simply to live life to the fullest. She is doing what she enjoys, which honestly, we all should treat life like it’s our last day cause tomorrow is not guaranteed; she’s honestly like the female Matty Healy. Still, of course, she’s her own artist; both those worlds just collided, though, for such a sick fucking record & I also love that she brags about how sick this song she just wrote is cause she’s right.
“Cologne” has a kinda punky undertone to it as she details an on & off relationship, just battling these conflicting emotions within herself as to whether or not she wishes to continue as they’ve been doing. She’d rather you just leave your scent behind; it’s enough to get her off. In “Animal Noises,” she deals with the grief that missing someone can bring about, but she understands that she’s getting too old to be feeling these childish ways. She’s got too much ahead of her to remain focused on the idea of love. Still, it’s not her fault that he gets her so high, that adolescence is so present on this record; it’s like high school all over again for me. I wish I could go back & put back together these romanticized images in my head that I dismantled before the release of this perfect EP.
