D’Shaun - Us (Video)
I first caught wind of D’Shaun after seeing King Khali mention him; I’m not sure if it was something to do with his playlist or what, but I know he inadvertently sent me this way & I was not disappointed by what I heard on his “KNG” album. He’s a poignant wordsmith who’s been apparently killing it for some time now, I’ve still yet to jump into the rest of his catalog, let alone the new EP this track here is taken from, but I know I’m in for something beautiful when I finally do & with “Us,” he’s dealing with the fate their relationship unfortunately had.
Some things just aren’t meant to last forever & D’Shaun is doing whatever he can to grapple with this fact. He seems genuine in wanting the two of them to reach a mutual understanding, but the relationship & history between them ran so deep. Just like the Mayan Ruins, a beautiful metaphor, by the way, that it’s not as easy for him to move on from it as I’m sure it was for her. Women are excellent when it comes to moving on, not saying it doesn’t hurt them as well, but men tend to get a little self-destructive. That’s not the case here, regardless if he’s numbing his pain with whatever is in his cup plus all the women he’s surrounding himself with in hopes to fill his void.
I’m going to have to go back & revisit the first “Girl” EP after this, being that he released it back in 2016 & came back all these years later for a sequel. It holds significance, especially if he’s baring his heart & soul as much as he is on this one, she wants commitment, but he’s too busy chasing his dreams to have it both ways. Something’s gotta give & unfortunately, it’s her, it’s tearing at him inside, but he’s mature enough to accept it, doesn’t mean it won’t ever stop stinging, now you with someone else enjoying your life but that was supposed to be “Us.”
