AJ Bray - Energy (Single)

Bray stays keeping that kinetic “Energy” flowing with his latest track. Still somewhat fresh off his magnum opus “Love Abuse,” which found him taking a new approach into R&B. He returns to his rap roots with another subtle banger, full of anything but filler & it’s even a new structure of the song for him too. An entire verse of him just snapping with such bravado & ease & then, of course, a short yet catchy enough hook at the end to keep you wanting more. I love those choruses that are just one sentence repeated over & over.

References to Golden Chick, Flo Milli, Jodeci, Charles Barkley, you name it, Bray’s references are always off the chain. Even paying homage to Too $hort, he’s a force to be reckoned with when you hear people like him, who fit into the mold of what Hip Hop has now become but still maintaining a skill level that’s high above a lot of them. You know that there’s no excuse to set the bar as low in terms of skill as a lot of artists tend to do. He gives you line after line of bars that’ll whiz right over your head if you aren’t really listening. Like when he states that this “rappin shit is easy” to him, but “all the bitches rather hear him sing,” the man does it all.

When it comes to visuals, PSDNYM is the man to go to; his visual work is always top-notch. Just the glow radiating off Bray as he continues to shine so blindingly on each of these tracks is palpable. He shows no signs of slowing down even if the songs themselves are smooth & slow, easily the most unpredictable artist in my eyes. This man dropped a bar that was a haiku here, which I’ve never heard a rapper do; he just keeps pushing that envelope further & further.
