Matthew Jordan - Forever Player (EP)
The South will always have something to say & you can emphasize that shit in the boldest of italics once you hear these 3 new records from Matthew Jordan, another great MC you’ve probably never heard of since your probably familiar with his previous name, Cardy. Not sure where this brother resides but one thing I do know is that how whole block is constantly being shaken up by his bass. The skills are undeniable off rip, not just his lyricism but that voice that’s administering the countless amounts of game to the listener, not to mention his ear for production & the two lone features, it’s truly something special he’s crafted here so let’s indulge.
Reporting live “From The Underground”, this sound of his is far from that, he ain’t just scratching the surface with these records, these songs are causing cracks within the concrete when he comes stepping through your stomping grounds, seemingly unannounced but his presence is more than felt as he establishes his dominance immediately. He keeps it player as can be when he comes swinging with the utmost gusto & confidence, people may stare at him with their envious looks & make their little snarky remarks about his character but they could never carry themselves this elegantly.
On the EP’s title track, things take a more R&B approach as he calls on his fellow player Banco Ray to spit game. The way he pimps the beat, just walking with a limp all over it but is still able to weave a little introspective reflection on it is a beautiful feat, paying homage to his grandfather while he watches his child sleep, wishing he could’ve had the chance to meet him & possibly share some of the wisdom he once shared with him, that same wisdom that probably molded him into the man he is today. The whole record just bleeds nostalgia as he ponders on these warm reminisces of simpler tones & Banco with another smooth verse, reminding his doubters that he really does this to the fullest, automatically shutting down any doubts people may have for him.
At the rate he’s going, I don’t think much can slow him down, but a great woman probably could motivate him to scoop her up for a little slow ride. The sound is infectious so she’s surely to be swooning once he lulls her into his fantasy she knows she’s been dying to see but little does she know, this is no fantasy, it just feels like it. We also get A.J. Bray with another beautiful verse, I haven’t really heard him in a pocket like this so it’s a pleasure to hear him still knee deep in this “Love Abuse” era of his, he’s always spoken to the ladies though & succeeded every time in getting them in his arms to show them the time of their lives. All in all, 3 excellent records that hope to hear more of in the near future, this was just an appetizer of what’s to inevitably come.
