Y2 - God Face (Album)
I first became familiar with the enigmatic Y2 back in 2018 when he featured on the hook for Tech N9ne’s “No Reason (The Mosh Pit Song). He also went on to deliver a captivating verse for another Strange Music act in Joey Cool on “Decisions, Decisions” that further got me looking closer into his ear-grabbing, eye-popping rhyme style. I haven’t heard many as ambidextrous as he is; his flow is all over the place but still easily digestible the way it’s packaged here on “God Face.”
Opening up the project introspectively back to back with the first two opening tracks. On the 1st, Y2 is floating with an aura as he delivers his anecdotes on the soulful soundscapes. Daunting on the next, being more minimalist, allowing you to continue listening to what’s being said & if you won’t, by the time the schizophrenic “This Is My Happy Face” comes on, the paranoiac in you will be running for dear life.
Y2 celebrates his people on “American Gods,” definitely striking fear into those who refuse to bow down. Those who don’t will get beat down to the daunting taunts of “Boosky” as Y2 keeps the same energy throughout the rest of the project. His rhymes are getting harder to keep your ears off of; it reminds me of early Latyrx shit with a new-school swagger to it. A mind fuck of a listening experience you’ll want to keep revisiting just to catch anything that will inevitably fly over your head.
