Cody Valdez - Murda In My Dreams (EP)
Daunting from the jump, you know immediately what you’re getting yourself into by the cover art alone. God forbids you to leave with murder on your mind. Still, you’ll have it on yours throughout the head trip of this “Nightmare” of an EP & personally; I am a big fan of that old school horror-core; I always wanted to hear the likes of an Esham over these haunting atmospheres.
Violence will most certainly ensue on “My Tommy Don’t,” it’s paranoia-inducing undertone and overtone conjures feelings of spiraling out of control, perhaps on a murder spree. Nothing too over the top but enough to make you sick to your stomach, but you can’t remember what happened the next day after all the chaos settles down. Waking up to a “Silent Sunrise,” hungover, coming off of heavy drugs, I don’t know, that’s just the feeling this kind of music gives me, like the Giovane Six assisted, sinister “On Da Menu” says, “murder on tha menu, murder all the time.”
“Creepin’” feels like the perspective of the victim, being chased down by the killer. The 21 Savage samples in the background are a nice touch; they’re more buried in the mix, in a shoegaze meets Memphis horrorcore meets modernist trap & no doubt that by the end of the listen. You definitely “Feel This,” perhaps suffering the consequences of your actions, feeling the hurt that you’ve caused & hopefully working to better yourself, end the madness this took me into on a brighter note, as this tumultuously chaotic EP does.
