Brooklyn Michelle - Retail Therapy (Single + Video)
BSZN is upon us, time to put together our best fits, hand me downs, don’t matter. What matters is how you make it work & Brooklyn makes it work, playing dress-up all over the dizzying production handled by Tedy Andreas & Brooklyn herself. That itself is a wild card, never would’ve guessed his involvement in this, but it makes it all the more wonderfully kooky for me. It’s a melancholy maze of assortments, ambidextrous stylistically, in both senses of the word, she’s feeling herself & we can’t help but follow suit.
It’s the same thing with the accompanying visual, though it’s not a maze per se, but it is very colorful, not so much a far cry from her “Lithium” debut last year, but certainly, a step into the elsewhere. Into the further, as I say, we’re starting to see lighter colors instead of the dull grays & muted hues of her ‘Lithium’ opus & that’s a beautiful thing. However, it’s still schizophrenic as in all over the place, finding her in different settings, neither no less colorful than the other & would you look at those rides she’s swaying & tangoing in a trance in front of with surprising features. Brooklyn states the meaning behind this record is her quote-unquote “obvious retail addiction & buying sweaters from her favorite store,” & that store would be none other than The Come Up, a beloved store here in the great & gorgeous San Antonio, closed currently while they move locations, plus the obvious panoramic but they insist we stay tuned so I’d have faith it’ll be sooner rather than later if you’re as big a fan as Brooklyn as I am.
More so, it’s about finally feeling comfortable in your own skin & your own style; we all have our insecurities, but “gotta look good when I don’t feel hot” there’s also a lot of witty lines that wobble through like “I find it silly that my Milly don’t Rock” & the way the French accent slips off her tongue is intoxicating, all you can do is bust open your wardrobe while mixing & mashing everything you got while dancing like there’s a party in your room with a set of mirrors all around. No one needs to be worrying about seeing the color of her money; people always pocket watching, aren’t they? It’s amusing & Brooklyn pays it no mind. Nothing at this moment in time, but she is capable of pulling her out of her zone. She’s in her car rushing down the road full speed ahead, beating the yellow lights repeatedly & right now, it seems her mood ring is stuck on giddy, nothing a new fit can’t fix.
