The Weekly Dip 3/11/22
We are back with another annual dip & as always, today’s additions are supplying you with that raw. As usual, we like to keep things mostly Hip Hop, being that, that’s the genre we cover the most but we still slide in a curveball or two, cause we all deserve a little variety when it comes to our musical palettes but anyhow, sit back, relax & maybe take your Weekly Dip in a hot tub or some naturally hot spring waters, if you can find any.
DJ Mykael V feat Foggieraw & Britton Rauscher - HVNSNT (Video)
We were surprised this week to see a cinematic experience from DJ Mykael V with Foggieraw & Britton Rauscher titled “HVNSNT.” The release would be an introduction for us to Britton Rauscher & DJ Mykael V, which they both did an incredible job in showcasing their prestigious work. At the same time, Foggieraw, who we’ve been familiar with for a while, delivers a sensational verse that flourishes gracefully in the release and welcomes him back to the scene where he’s been missing for a brief time. It’s always a great feeling to get blessed with new art like this, and it’s a better feeling leading new listeners to great music like it, which I know many will follow ahead to become new fans of their craft. Expect much more content from these three in the year, as we will be doing the same. - Frank Campos
HANZ & Rwude - Vino (EP)
Days before ending the month of February, HANZ had released the visual to his collaborative record with Rwude titled “Gimmie Summ,” which would be the first single from the duo’s upcoming EP titled “VINO.” The video would help create awareness of what we could expect from the two, especially with how creative the video concept came to alive. From going forward with views that led the charge on the release, at the end of the first week in March, we received the 4-track EP that was looked at as a powerful drop during the month. A flavor of illustrious raps with crisp production bulldozed through these four records and became an instant hit for existing listeners & new viewers. I hope to see a follow-up video or full-length project appear from this release in the near future which will indeed satisfy our listening urge. - Frank Campos
Wakai - When There Was No Sun feat Mick Jenkins (Single) x Starter Jacket (Single)
During the ending days of February, I remember seeing the name Wakai on two separate occasions on the same day, which intrigued me since I was unfamiliar with his work. Both instances on social media shared a new release, it was a featured record with Mick Jenkins titled “When There Was No Sun,” which is a phenomenal single that swayed left to right with tranquil vibes that helped build attention for the Baton Rouge emcee in mere seconds of the listening experience. After just being introduced to him by way of his latest single, I did my homework on his art, which led me to another new drop from him. The release was his first 2022 single titled “Starter Jacket” with Emmavue, it was accompanied by a visual to showcase his phenomenal artistry. I couldn’t decide which to promote on the site, so I chose both releases to share & introduce new listeners to this talented artist who will think undoing will make a significant impact in the year. - Frank Campos
Camilla Covington feat Nick Curry - Sum Lacey (Single)
Shoutout to Lilly Aviana, who earlier this week shared a snippet of Camilla Covington's latest visual, “Sum Lacey.” The track features Nate Curry, who provided a crooning effect to this special release that warms our hearts. It shares the intimate side of being in a relationship, showing the comical side of being eccentric & cute. It flourished nicely, with the vocals being a signature part of the release, plus the amusing structure of the video’s story & its zany wordplay that makes this a favorite drop of the week. It makes me smile every time I see the video to know my relationship is just as similar to being unconventional but that I wouldn’t give up since I live life with my soulmate who makes me the happiest person in the world. The sultry sounds of Camilla’s voice make this is an incredible find and one to cherish as being a new introduction to an artist who will keep on our radar moving forward. - Frank Campos
TATYANA - Kiss Me Right Now (Video)
Earlier this week, I got introduced to songstress Tatyana through her latest visual, “Right Places,” which shared her sensual vocals & alluring image to us in such a vivid way that it instantly made us new fans of her music in mere seconds. Her heavenly voice is star-studded in all of her records & she shows off such seductive prowess in her videos that we can see how she has a bevy of views in her releases. This latest viewing is nothing short of greatness; she parades in the bedroom with wanting you to plant your lips on hers and urges the experience to keep her feeling limitless. You make her feel invincible, like she’s walking on a cloud; it’s the thrill of having you close that excites her and becomes the most genuine thing to admire from you. I’m quite pleased with this find, and I know, during research, that she has a project in the finishing stages that should be surfacing in the near future. Become new fans of her music here, and be sure to thank us later. - Frank Campos
Angel Cintron - Pink Honda Civic (Single)
Ever since her debut, Angel Cintron has been catching dreams left & right & her growth not only as an artist but as a person, they both go hand in hand, has been nothing short of impeccably beautiful to witness. As of late though, she’s been on a bit of a tear with her musical output, I mean, these songs that she’s been releasing as of late, are some of her best yet. The reason I make that claim is plain as day, it’s just the raw vulnerability that she’s displayed throughout these records but that vulnerability is ever so present on “Pink Honda Civic”. I’m not entirely certain on what this vehicle symbolizes but if I had to make an educated guess, I’d say it’s indicative of her getting in her vehicle & leaving behind something that no longer serves her, even though I am almost certain it pains her to do. It’s a shame when things just fall apart, people do grow further away from one another due to many reasons, many circumstances out of our control & that’s just life & she’s moving forward with hers regardless. Hopefully these singles are all leading towards a potential sophomore effort/follow up to “Dream Catcher” cause, especially after this single, there’s no denying these records thus far are album material.
Reverie & R.A. The Rugged Man - GLASS IDOLS (Video)
If anybody ever felt that Reverie went soft on them after her “sometimes i like 2 sing <3” album then they were quickly molly whopped once she dropped “ALL EYEZ ON ME” & judging from that record, as well as the detail of the bold, capitalized lettering, it’s safe to say that our underrated queen in Reverie, as well as her producer Louden, are about to re-remind anybody who either doubted her skills or may not know of her lethal skill set. Legends like R.A don’t just stand beside any MC & she goes bar for bar, sparring with R.A. as both lyricists fiercely shatter this beat into pieces, the same way people try to shatter them into pieces. Artists are delicate creatures & their glass hearts must be handled with care & if not, well then they’ll turn right around, pick up the pieces & create mosaic patterns when it comes to the rhyme, staining already stained glass. PS, we need more women & men going bar for bar, just to shut out the rampant misogyny that plagues the culture cause MC’s like Rev, clearly can go toe to toe with the best of them.
SadGirl - About Us (feat. Trouble Kidd & Jewl$) (Video)
It’s always beautiful to come across an artist that an OG in the game is really backing, really supporting, I don’t know about y’all but I trust the OG’s & while strolling through the gram, I came across the legend, Mr. Capone-E showing love to a young, up & comer in SadGirl. You can tell she’s experienced a lot of heartache when you hear her flow & she channels that in her messaging, aimed to help the youth within not only her community but many others. Too many outsiders look at these communities a certain way & treat them poorly rather than lend a helping hand to do something as simple as, uplift. SadGirl just has this gruffness to her flow that really drives her messaging home & the other two artists on the track do their thing as well. Heartfelt & important that we have our people speaking their truths & showing others that they too can overcome these hardships of ours.
Kidd Lee - Believe (Video)
I gotta say, Kidd Lee is a problem. She’s young, raw & her message is all about God but her music is not preachy in any sort of way, it’s packaged in a very palatable fashion. The affinity I have for the introspective runs so deep so I appreciate her baring her heart & soul over this soulful instrumentation. Too much I’ve seen music like hers get labeled as “Christian Rap” when she’s rhyming at such an elite level so why split her apart into some made up sub genre just cause she’s very expressive when it comes to her faith in God, last I checked, lots of artists express their faith plenty but not all of them get lumped in that category but I digress. It’s just this level she’s rhyming at is so impeccable & she just dropped off her latest EP “Chosen”, which will leave you digging deeper into her archive thus far. It’s literally the Holy Grail, God energy & high quality raps, what more can you ask for. Definitely an artist you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for the remainder of the year cause I can personally already tell she’s about to have a prolific one with how effortlessly elite she is, or at least she just makes it look easy.
Benny The Butcher - 10 More Commandments (feat. Diddy) (Video)
Where are all of our biased GRISELDA lovers at? We hope y’all are as excited about the release of the highly anticipated “Tana Talk 4” & not only did the Butcher supplies us with another impeccable body of work, he also gifted us with another visual treatment for his Biggie addendum! If you aren’t aware of that Notorious classic then just stay under that rock you’ve been living in, go play cause the adults are talking, shoo. This is one of the many things I admire about them GRISELDA boys, they’re not only always paying homage to those before them who paved the way for them to keep that spirit of Hip Hop alive like they’ve been but, they also execute in a way that always does them justice. Biggie would be more than proud, I mean imagine, if he was still alive & was on this record alongside Diddy, you already know Biggie would’ve done it in less than a heartbeat, no questions asked & murdering alongside Benny, a man can dream can he? But yeah, Benny place in the game is forever solidified after this record alone, let alone the entire album.
Yelawolf & Shooter Jennings - Jump Out The Window (Video)
I haven’t been this excited about a Yelawolf project since 2015’s “Love Story”. The reason I say that though, is not to say that any of his output since then has faltered in any way but, it’s just something about when Wolf gets into his musical bag that really does it for me. He’s always had music that crossed over, genre bended if you will, nobody mixes country & Hip Hop better but how about Wolf going fully into a Rock bag? That’s what he’s been concocting lately with the legendary Shooter Jennings, together going by Sometimes Y & their latest single is the best out of all 3 so far. It has this alternative edge to it but you can’t escape the sense of nostalgia it gives the listener, this is the kind of music that makes you want to move mountains & doesn’t Wolf look like an absolute badass treading these terrains in these visuals, I mean c’mon. I’m too excited to see what this album brings & hopefully it brings more spotlight onto Wolf as an artist cause man is he criminally underrated. Not only that but these two also literally just dropped another one titled “Radio” that’s also a must hear cause why not plug a 2 in 1 with this excerpt.
NASAAN - COME OUTSIDE! (Video)
What I really admire about Nasaan is that, he don’t live in his father shadows but he certainly keeps his legacy alive & we already know how proud that man would be of his son. Nasaan has been such a silent assassin ever since his name rang into my ears after the Eminem co-sign & I would not be surprised if Shady brought him onto the team cause he’d be such an excellent addition to the family. On his latest “Come Outside”, it just feels like a Shady release to me, maybe due to the affiliation but, it’s just his skillset when it comes to not only the rhymes, which are ridiculously insane but his creativity, cause although we don’t have visuals quite yet for this single, judging from the many beat switches & how seamlessly he adjusts his flow to find those unique ass pockets he finds, as well as previous visuals, you already know it’s gonna be a watch as compelling as the record itself. Oh, & before I forget, FUCK EMPIRE! As NASAAN states in the video description, they keep removing this beast of a record off streaming but fret not, he’s going against what I’m almost certain is the label’s wishes & has dropped the song to his personal YouTube page for all to enjoy! I think Eminem & Paul gotta help him out even more so now. Just imagine what he could accomplish with the freedom to really spread his wings creatively, with no one holding him back.
