Kid Yatez - A Kid At Heart (Album)
The debut album from San Antonio’s best kept secret Kid Yatez is here & its one of the more earnest listens you’ll have the pleasure of hearing this year! Yatez main goal is to help people at their lowest moments through his art. As talented as he is, he doesn’t wish to be placed on such a pedestal that we forget he’s on a level playing field with us. On the album’s intro, he holds his “Heah High” as he reflects on the past storms of turmoil he had to venture through in order to get to this chapter in his life. I’m sure we can all relate to the immense pain that comes with finding our lot in this life. Kid’s autotune crooning over this number makes the record all the more soulful in its motivations as he sings his heart out in hopes of returning the favor back to his loving & supporting family for holding him down & pushing him to achieve his dreams all these years. It’s beautiful to see a young man with his priorities in order.
It all starts with “Self Maintenance”, sometimes it doesn’t hurt to be a little selfish when all you’ve been is selfless your entire life. If people in your life decide to let go then let them go, people tend to do this at your lowest moments when you need them the most but then they love to come around when they see you persevere, it’s like they only love you when you’re up, never when you’re down & Kid don’t got no more space for that in his life. He allows his soul to bleed on “Good Friends”, as he speaks on those who claim to be his friend but then turn around & do funny things to make him question their friendship. Maybe it’s all in his head, paranoid even but something tells him they aren’t as good as they claim to be. Jus Deno slides on with an entirely different flavor that only further soars the record to its soulful altitudes. You gotta respect the elite level he’s rhyming at, especially with his pen game being as introspective as it is. On “Cover”, he gives away free jewelry based off his experiences maneuvering the fugaziness of this game & life in general.
Blessed to see another day on “Sunrise”, Yatez takes this time to sing himself another lulling soliloquy as he reflects on his own struggles & vulnerabilities. Everyday is a battle with oneself, we tend to be our own worst enemies at times but he knows he’s got the will to overcome his own demons, encouraging us to recognize our own strength. Sometimes on our journey, we can be a little too prideful to ask for a helping hand to assist us through the pain. It can be hard to learn to trust & accept genuine love in your life after being let down so much, Yatez understands this all too well but still yearns for someone to extend their olive branch whenever his self awareness frightens him. Whether he’s pining over love lost in “Silence” or acknowledging how “Gifted” he truly is, especially at times where he doesn’t really feel like it, he’s still treading down the “Streets Of Gold” he’s paved for himself & is only looking ahead at what’s to come from journeying along this path of his.
