Charwellz - You Are Here (Album)

The debut from Charwellz is here, as are we, to experience it in all it’s glory. If you haven’t been living under a rock then you’re aware of the almighty, Supreme Innovation, to which Charwellz is a prominent, long time member of, alongside people like L.i.T. & Apollo Black, whom helped people like myself become acquainted. He’s got to be one of our silent assassins, both on the mic & behind the boards & on his debut, we get to see witness both at play. There’s an ominous feel to his trap minimalism all throughout the 9 track tape. Opening up with “Mr. Blackheart”, Charwellz has big aspirations & will attain them by all means necessary, even if it means having to protect himself in a violent manner. His calm demeanor as he’s maneuvering through the madness, showcase how nonchalant he is when it comes to the bullshit, his flow just tears right through it, effortlessly, though the overall feel of the track has a sense of paranoia to it, or more so, it could just be the fact that he’s always on high alert. Mr. Blackheart is too aware though to ever be caught slipping so try him at your own risk if you feel so inclined.

Don’t just love these daunting undertones? Those keys or chimes, whatever you’d call them, just looming over the beat as he ponders the unfathomable on “Understand”, a record that, although a mere freestyle, still does what it needs to & gets the message across. “Fck You Know” about the darkness he’s had to persevere through for longer than he cares to specify? This production sounds like the descent of angels as Charwellz makes them weep with his psychedelic induced horror. He’s just laying it all out for those who may not be aware how blackened his heart can become when pressed. He has no problem conjuring up the Devil in he, if need be. Though why waste his time with naysayers, they “Aint Sht”, but neither is he, as clearly he’ll stoop to their level to wack them upside the head.

The previously released “Clone Me” found Charwellz refusing to be subjected to such experiments. They don’t really be in the lab like that, enough to turn into a rat of any sorts. If they keep testing him though then he may be the one running various tests on them, unpleasant ones at that. Anybody who tries him is a “Dead Man”, he worked too hard to get to this juncture in his life & career to not be the one catching them slipping 1st, he’ll be damned if he ain’t the one stripping them of everything they got before they get any chance to rob him blind. He’s the “Super Saiyan” of this rap shit but even the strongest have their vulnerabilities as he explains his struggles, asking us to “Look” into his eyes & see the pain he carries daily. His self awareness is bleeding all throughout this project, even as he sleepwalks through the album’s final cut “Wide Awake”. He knows the areas that need improvement so unlike anybody who’s judging him, he’s actually taking those steps to evolve, maybe they should follow suit or lead themselves into the abyss.
